Nagoya is a little bit congested but Japan is quite easy to drive generally as drivers are very polite.

Parking is the killer most of the time as it can be very expensive in the cities.

I rented from Times Rental - they have very good promotions usually.

Can consider getting the expressway pass but depends on where you go.

Can share the itinerary?

I don't have the itinerary per se now as it was quite a long time ago.

But generally started from Nagoya and south to Ise. Also went to Shima to have oysters (it was winter season). Went to Mikimoto resort and tried their pearl onsen - very luxurious and totally worth it. The theme park is not worth it.

After that we went north to Shirakawago to catch snow but it didn't snow and became a wasted trip. Dropped by Wakayama along the way and also Gero onsen.
