I had gotten some good advises when I started threads on both Chiang Rai following by Loei. As such starting this thread hopefully can consolidate the experiences and also various places of interests of different provinces for intending self driving kakis.

Next up, had booked air ticket to Ubon Ratchathani on July, mainly for the Candle Festival. All advises and suggestions are welcomed :D

Interesting, think i also gave some inputs for your Loei trip? I was kind of doing the same thing as you 1-2 year ago. Basically flying from bangkok to provinces then self drive around to explore the province or nearby, and if possible watch local football league as well.

Went Ubon back in Feb 2016. You can go the national park or khong chiam where the mekong river meet with the mun river. There's also the thai grand canyon (sam phan bok) at the mekong river further up. The night market is quite similar to other provincial night market, cheap eats and stuff.

So far did self driving in Ubon, Khon Kaen, Loei, Udon Thani, Sukhothai-Phitsanulok, Chiangmai-Chiangrai-Maehongson, Lampang, Buriram. Others more closer to bkk is to hua hin and cha am.

Thanks to your suggestion which I managed to stay one night at a resort near the entrance of Phu Ruea. Interesting but scary as whole resort only me staying due to low season i think 😬
Next year hope I can do a longer distance drive from Bangkok to Chiang Rai, stopping over night at provinces along the way. Camping at Phu ChinFa is on my list as I didnt manage to go during last trip.
May I ask which Car Rental u always rented with? Also ever encountered any breakdown (my fear since i solo)

How was it? Is the pirated Hello Kitty Theme Resort still there?

I always use AVIS and generally quite reliable. However recently i use Hertz as they allow for an one-way return as i rented at chiangrai but retur at chiangmai. Was given a free upgrade but the aircon broke down when i was about to go chiangmai. Due to time constraint i didn’t bother to call Hertz, but heard from another friend who had issue with the gear or something, they called hertz and they came over to the hotel with a replacement car quite fast.

In general so far no major mechanical issue with rental cars in thailand

Would like to suggest to have a second wallet that contain smaller notes, put in reasonable amount of 50s or 100s and keep the 1000s.

We were once stopped by TP and asked for money. When he saw the wallet full of cash, he pointed to the brown color note as if it's his ATM.
