I emailed Dell support to confirm whether self upgrade ram and HDD will void warranty, below are the reply...

We understand you're concerned about the system and the warranty and hence you would like to confirm about the upgrade process.

You can certainly install the parts on your own, however we would request you to please replace the parts carefully as if any parts get hampered while installing the parts may got get replaced under warranty.

Your system will carry its own warranty as available but the parts which you install on the system will not carry the same warranty. The parts installed separately will have it own separate warranty.

For your reference Case number is : xxxxxxx

If you have any other query or concern, please feel free to revert back to my email and we will be happy to assist you on the same.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding. Have a great day!

Best regards,
xxxx xxxxxx

I think he meant "the parts may not get replaced under warranty", so i think is fine to do ur own upgrade urself for Dell notebooks.

Anyone has any experience of self upgrade ram / HDD and face issue with warranty later on??? Thanks.

Depend on your laptop model, Ultrabook than better
let them do it.
As opening it is very difficult unlike standard notebooks.

What they mean is very simple.
You can upgrade no issue, however if there are any
issues.

That particular part you have to RMA it.
RAM/HDD should be no issue but WIFI cards and etc.
better not.

However the laptop screw do not have any sealed sticker , meant if remove then warranty void.

Such as Acer swift at the bottom has round sealed sticker.

So better don't peeling off, if your laptop still under warranty period.

If your laptop such as Thinkpads just 5 screws only, they welcome you upgrade the SSD.

Just make sure you keep the pre- factory set.
Do not format it, just in-case your pc/laptop has issue then put back the original SSD will do.

The new SSD can plug in and do new install will works.

Such as Ram is on-board so nothing to do self upgrade.

Dell's Ultrabooks are typically easy to open; just some Philips screws and the bottom cover comes off.

In fact, it's easier than the usual notebooks from yesteryears.

Self upgrade ram / HDD would not face any issue with warranty.

The "the parts may not get replaced under warranty" refer to those parts you buy and replaced yourself.

As long as you do not tamper with those sealed stickers then it is no issue.

Even if you replace the HDD and later the notebook is not working.
At the service center they would evaluate and if nothing to do with the HDD you replaced, warranty is still applicable.

At the end of the day, ensure do not damage any other components while doing the replacement.
