just came back from the trip
sorry..noob photographer here so I wont be chu chou-ing

some quick info

i got a sim card from three.hk ...no prob with the great firewall at all..facebook, whatsapp, google etc all good to go

main mode of transport: didi
its not expensive...most areas within shanghai cost less than 20rmb...2 pax on metro is maybe ard 8rmb so i just took didi mostly and more importantly..no need to remember the places/road names in chinese...drivers are used to wechatpay/alipay so have exact change ready..it seems that they were told not to collect cash previously as some drivers insisted they cannot take cash...until they see it on their app that u r paying by cash..folks r generally honest but may be due to the tone they talk may sound abit...brash?

payment method: cash
mobile payment is no doubt king in shanghai but can still get by w traditional paper money...some places may be some discount w alipay/wechatpay but the hassle to get money into the account I just gave up

traveling out of shanghai: high speed rail
depends on the size of yr party...may be better to book in advance on ctrip..took the train 4times only sitted next to wife for 1trip...there r 2 stations hongqiao & shanghai stn....to me shanghai stn is actually nearly to me..I stayed rather near people's square w direct train to hongqiao...but it took me half the time to go shanghai stn than to hongqiao..not sure why ppl (hotel staff too actually) recommends hongqiao for suzhou and hangzhou

You are probably referring to 南外滩轻纺面料市场 near Nanpu Bridge. I visited many years ago. Certainly the place to get your tailoring done with the fabrics you select.
