Am aware of train service however seems the transfer from train station to city needs a bus transfer of an hour. So total time is around the same?

Returned from Shantou visit. Stayed at happy hotel. It's next to chengbao hotel and short walk away from Shantou international.

Paid rmb340 for deluxe twin room. Big at 40sqm. Clean, free titbits in the room.
Given 4 free buffet meals a day! Breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. Teochew porridge is good, other stuff not so much. Have kway teow tng.

There's free shuttle to chaosan train station. Took the high speed train from there to Shenzhen North station. Concierge helped to buy train tickets for rmb127 which includes rmb20 admin fee (per pax). Tickets delivered with an hour.

Shopping and food streets is a 10 minute walk in direction of shantou international. Just end of the block.

15-20 minute walk to Jian ping road. Lots of of food there.

For what in particular. Hotel and train back to Shenzhen already mentioned.

Took bus from HK to shantou for hkd180 all in 6 hours.

Sample of food costs:
Kway teow soup rmb40. Lots of in ingredients.

Meal in nice hot restaurant <S$14 a pax.

Went to a place out of town for lion head goose. Bill is rmb320 for 9 persons.

Where are the places of interest you would recommend ? Current plan is to go Paifang street. Is Nan Ao island worth the visit ? I have 3 days and not sure where to bring to go ..

Iirc shuttle too Chaosan train station is 9.30am. Takes an hour or so depending on traffic. Enough time for my train to Shenzhen. You'll need to reserve seats with reception at least the day before.

You are asking about jinping pedestrian street? It's 2 blocks away from Shantou international hotel. Turn left after and you'll be able to see the food Street. The shopping street is adjacent.

Didn't take taxi so can't answer your questions in them.

For sightseeing, we hired a mini bus from the hotel so didn't go to all the sights. Mainly it's food hunting.

The hotel offers several tour routes. Some are available on certain days of the week. There's one for rmb99/pax which goes to local attractions. You can enquire at the hotel for more details. Think it'll be easier than going all over on your own, don't have to deal with transport issues.

When walking around please exercise caution as cars are parked on pavements and lots of cyclists and motorcyclists are pretty reckless. Also be prepared for the incessant horning by road users.

Think you can discuss on places which interests you with your driver. The Lao Jie (old town) is undergoing massive renewal so the driver did a drive through. Can't recall the name of places.
The market is interesting. More interested in they local delicacies.

Took the train to Shenzhen North, stayed a night in luohu before returning to HK. From the after the border crossing took the MTR to Kowloon.

Unless one has really elderly parents who are unable to move around too much, I think - and if this is going to be once in a lifetime trip and you are a Teochew - it would be good to cover Jieyang, Shantou and Chaozhou (3 in 1) one shot.

This way you get a feel for the place from where your forefathers came.

Do not expect to be seeing a Singapore there. Just take whatever comes along, for the education and eye opening. That's a part your history.

Quality is a bit mixed.

Didn't eat lunch and dinner. For breakfast their you tiao not bad. They have kway teow tng and teochew porridge.

Supper as it's pretty quiet,nice place to chit chat.

Anyway can't complain when it's free.

They have a restaurant with 20% discount for guests.

Yes, shouldn't be a problem. As I said make reservation with front desk earlier to reserve seats.

Ok tks. As I will be travelling on a Sat morning, I think the station may be crowded. My concern is pertain to how much time i should cater for ticket collection and finding the platform etc.

There's security screening at station entrance. After that there's big seating area.

Finding the platform is easy. They let passengers into the platform according to train schedule. Directions are well marked.

My group got the hotel to buy the train tickets for us. Rmb fee of 20 per ticket. Tickets delivered to us within an hour. 2nd class with numbered seating. Saves the hassle.
