If you are worried about warranty then stay away from amazon.

It is not possible to repair in SG. You are only allowed to send it back to US to do the RMA process back. Pay for shipping and they will ship for you back free.

You can actually send it direct to US address.

And they will send it back to you.

No need to go thru forwarder.

1) Go TP or any of your other favorite SLS shops and haggle/get as close as possible to base price

2) Buy from Amazon. The amount you save still significant even if include shipping fee back to USA for RMA (very rare for M500/530/840Evo/840Pro to fail within the warranty period anyway

3) Hoot from Amazon with expedited/priority shipping if you can't wait 2.5 - 3.5 weeks with the free shipping. Add USD15/USD33 for the faster shipping

I believe if any of today's SSDs fail (of which I can only think of the NAND mati), there's no way to repair it.

Have to send back to distro (if ssd is local stock) or manufacturer (if ssd is buy from Amazon/overseas)

This things are all non repairable. They will rma/change the whole thing for you. And to do so they will go thru local distributors. And local do not accept overseas products and do an exchange for you. They will reject when they ask your proof of purchase. And if it is local then they will accept it. Else they will help you send back with a fee.

Take note. Not all distributors are kind to do that for you.

I take it to mean an actual repair to retrieve your data in the event of a failure? None of the manufacturers will do that for you. T&C also states that data not part of warranty. Standard procedure is RMA - they'll usually replace for you a new one.

Possible to repair, but not worth it, a cursory check with data recovery centres will get quotes of $1000 upwards if SSD failure. ($800 if you are lucky)

With today's big players like Crucial/Intel/Samsung, shouldn't be any problem. They're better off properly validating their product rather than entertaining failure returns (a la Intel taking more than a year than everyone else to validate the SF2281-based 520 )

Even if it does fail, shipping something as small as a ssd back isn't going to be very expensive. Just make sure when you buy you get a large discount over local prices to make it worth while.

For the 120/128GB drives I wouldn't say its worth it, but anything 250GB and up the price differences start becoming quite large especially during sales.

SSD drives these days appear to be generally reliable. I'm a small sample size, but to reassure you, 3 of my SSDs bought from Amazon have had no issues after 3-4 years. Even so, the savings in money, as others have mentioned, would probably more than compensate for the shipping for RMA purposes (for 250GB and higher). The only worry you should have is how much downtime can you afford if it happens?
