Hello Everyone,

Need some suggestions and opinions regarding my plans. It's been a long time since i look at PC hardware stuff. Today i went to Sim Lim and take a look around.
Was kinda surprised to see lots of new things i wasn't aware of. The last remembered Z77 Mobo is kinda new in the market. but today i found out that Z87, Z97 are all nothing new in the market already.

Sad to say, i am still using a Z68 motherboard, and here comes the question. Do i need to upgrade my mobo and CPU? my cpu is a i5 2500 with a Asus P8z68-V pro/ Gen 3.

i recently upgraded my GPU to GTX 970, and sound card that failed on me.
is it necessary for me to change my Motherboard and cpu?
and what is a Decent memory(Ram) to have nowadays? i am running 16gb.
is that good enough?

Hardware Veterans here, could anyone please help me with this?
Thanks a lot.

Your system is fine. If you like, you can upgrade the CPU to i7-2600(K) or i7-3770(K) and sell your old i5-2500.

Hi TS...

The short answer is no. You don't to upgrade at all. Full stop.

Your Z68 and i5-2500 is more than enough for your needs if u don't see any lag whatsoever. The latest mobos and CPU are quite comparable in performance with yours. You are just wasting money if u change these 2 components.

Do u have an SSD? That is increase the loading and writing of apps performance of your system. Other than that, your system is already a beast with your GTX 970. :)

is ur sound card onboard or sound card?

decent ram mean the quality or the type of ram? almost every reputable brands that make ram are decent ram. or u mean like what is the minimum requirement? or like what is the usaual ram people u using? all i can say it varies every user. normal office - 4GB, gaming -8GB, photo editing and rendering program 16GB and above, the rest depends on the needs/budget and wanting more.

Yup, i do have a SSD for my OS and 2 of the games i played most. lag not much, occasionally its lags a bit or so when i run games. but it just happens when i load into the game. other than that.. its fine.
i am just wondering if the old Mobo and cpu will restrict the performances of any of my new upgrades. that's my main concern.
since i upgraded my OS to windows 10. the free upgrade.. my systems seems slightly slower than before also.

My soundcard is a Asus xonar, cause my onboard sound card does not work properly after a year. then it stopped working with tons of issue... i brought it to Sim lim the that time and i was told that the onboard sound is not working. they gave me 3 solution, 1. Send my board in since was still under warranty that time. 2. Buy a new Mobo if i am feeling rich and sell this after warranty replacement. 3. buy a soundcard.
i eventually went with the soundcard.
hahaha

Ram as in whats the average people are using now? is 16GB sufficient nowadays? cause i am quite a multi tasker... i run like 7 to 8 apps together.. SPotify, Chrome(a few windows), office, Skype, dropbox.
mine is DDR3, any big jump in performance for DDr4?

No performance gain in ddr4 unless you using integrated graphics.

Your system is still Jin Satki with i5-2500.
I suggest you tong until AMD Zen come out.

If AMD Zen behkan your cpu can tong for at least 2 more years.

Ah I see for your soundcard. Well if this is so I'm still in for your upgrades on the mobo and cpu , unless u willing to get another sound card.

Next I have already stated the amount of ram foe each user, still I would say on ave is 8GB~16GB. Lastly u won't need so many of rams unless u have around 10 hungry ram eating apps, esp like chrome which can consume up to 200mb for some YouTube.

Just wondering... can anyone enlighten me if how does a CPU affects game speed and performance? cause i feel that my mentality could be wrong. cause in my opinion, when it comes to games, only the GPU is important, and nothing else matters.

It depends on the type of games you play. Most current games are DX11 titles which most Sandy Bridge CPUs can handle. So you are right in that it is the GPU which is important.

Going ahead, DX12 games are more demanding on the CPU and you would benefit from more cores and hyper-threading (i.e. i7 CPUs).

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3039552/hardware/tested-how-many-cpu-cores-you-really-need-for-directx-12-gaming.html

For me, I prefer strategy games so GPU is not important to me and I go for a fast CPU.

If your soundcard is a PCI card, then yes you will have to get a new one cos no more PCI slots in newer motherboards.

If your soundcard is a PCI-e or USB card, then no need.

If your soundcard is from your motherboard, you will change it when you change your motherboard. How that looks like differs from model to model; most models are integrated onto them, while others provide a separate PCIe card.
