Should the politically apathetic group be blamed?

You know those kinds who don't follow local affairs and have poor knowledge of political landscape in singapore. They don't bother to attend rallies, explaining low turnouts for pap rallies but still have to vote. So they vote based on party they are normally familiar with all these years. Eg: voting for lightning not due to strong support for them but because they don't really know much of opposition and neither care to find out, but they've at least heard of ruling party.

On the other hand, those who are politically aware would be more vocal and more omnipresent at opposition rallies.

Back to this group of apathetic people, who don't represent the general sentiments of the politically aware, they will definitely outweigh the rest in numbers. Therefore, strong mandate for PAP may not be all it seems, but due to the ignorance of a large majority.

the majority has spoken. nothing more nothing less. if the majority is politically apathetic then that is how it is.

If anything blame PAP compulsory voting law which forces the silent majority out to vote the incumbent.

In the developed world only sg and Australia(where it isn't enforced) have tis absolutely undemocratic policy

I don't blame PAP supporters who are taking a side. In fact, I admit opposition has eroded due to the sagas surrounding them as of recent.

However, the bochup group generally has no views and sabotages people who do.

yes and no

true greek democracy actually involves everyone in the process through lottery, hence forcing any apathetic to learn and catch up in order to perform their job.

our education system doesn't educate on governance, democracy, role and responsibility of citizenship, and aspects of nationhood. many ppl still thinks that the government is the "highest" and always "correct", and that the people should "work" for the gov and society.

so you can't really blame ppl for not knowing if they wasn't exposed to such western ideals.

How do we get to this point? By years and years of brainwashing by the pap.

They will vote pap no matter what. Even if the pap now is as lousy as poop.

"It is accepted as democratic when public offices are allocated by lot; and as oligarchic when they are filled by election." - Aristotle, Politics IV, 350 BC.

The key premise of democracy is the power to choose and that should include first and foremost the power to choose not to choose

Why have 3,000 people vote for 1 person to take care of a ministry, when the 3,000 can directly vote on the policies and run the ministry as a group? Cut out the middle man. That's what democracy is - direct input into the government.

Trust me, there is a silent majority who really don't care and can't be bothered.

I know of friends who are just interested that today is a PH and long weekend. 7 early 8 early vote Liao go airport for 3d2n trip to bkk or up to msia.

Some of them don't even care who their MP is and they just say, PAP lor, got job, got money earn, now our money so strong against ringgit, then if vote opposition Liao maybe property price will drop. Status quo best.

What to do

As quoted by Kenneth Jeyaretnam, Singaporeans deserves the government that they voted for. Whether good or bad is yet to see, I hope the majority has made the right choice today
