Hi I'm 22 this year. About to enlist to Ns in 2 weeks time. I currently have a place in a local uni studying criminology at sit university of liverpool but that will take place in 2 years time. So my question is, should I sign on with Spf to help pay some of the school fees? cause my family isn't financially stable and I'm the only one that they are leaning on for a brighter future. And also I plan to become a police officer in solving cases or maybe crime analysis workers who don't necessarily have to be with the police force. I'm torn. I'm told to not take the criminology course and instead apply for engineering in ntu or It in Smu because they say you'll earn more. But I'm more focused about passion and things I like. I couldn't care less about the pay. I just want to solve crimes and keep the world a safer place for everyone . I'm not gonna waste 3 years in uni studying engineering then become a detective. It's wasting your time in something that does not interest you. As for people who encourage me to sign on, should I do it during my Ns? Cause I'm drafted into the army but I'm actually studying more police related. So it would advisable to sign on after I'm done with army?

Drop an Email to SPF career officer if I am not wrong called Kenneth Neo.

Sponsorship of degree of study your KPI must be outstanding. Else very hard.

Think you can only sign on for SPF when you are almost done with NS now given you are enlisting into SAF in 2 time. Pretty sure you don't need a criminology degree to solve crimes.

1) Studying criminology is waste of time and money. It just teach you history and why people commit crime. If you fail to become a Senior / Police Officer, you will lose to a private business graduate who you compete a graduate job that require a degree without any specific major because your criminology knowledge is useless and not required for almost all jobs.

2) If you ever become a Senior / Police Officer, you do not needs to study criminology because SPF basic training will train you to do investigation. If you are interested to become a License Private Investigator, you just needs to go for WSQ Perform Investigation Activities in Compliance with Legal Requirements (PI) course with ntuc learninghub.

3) Just apply with SPF with or without scholarship (Apply any course but not criminology. I recommend Psychology because it is closest to criminology) since you wish to become a Senior / Police Officer instead of wasting 2 years of your life in SAF.

Thank you kyoji. Criminology not only teaches about history but also the law and degree of crimes created. Most judges have to go through a criminology expert before passing the sentencing like 2 or 5 years in jail or probation etc. I'm more interested in that field. Not necessarily have to be a police officer. But if I were to follow your route, I'm not really interested in psychology since I'm very weak in science.
My best bet is either in engineering or programming. And also do you think it's a good thing to sign on with Spf? Or maybe I should just forget about taking a degree

1) Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think Singapore needs judges to go through a 'criminology expert' before passing the sentencing to offenders.

2) If you want to be a Senior Police Officer like Inspector, get a degree. If you only want to Police Officer like Sergeant, don't get a degree. But the most important thing is, what you want for a career & does the job require a degree? If you have not make up your mind, just serve your NS first and use this 2 years to think of it.

I don't think psychology is sciency, but psychiatry is more science? Cause the former is not medical, but the latter is. But I maybe wrong.

Nobody can tell you whether it is good thing to sign on or not. it depends on why u want to sign on.

I wouldn't say forget about taking a degree. I think it depends on your attitude? now is kinda a paper chase society, so depends if u buy the idea there's a need.

Should I re apply to other schools again during my ns year or should I just go for the criminology degree?

For number 1 most crime offenses are sought through criminology expert to give sentencing or verdict since the information I got from was from the lecturers themselves. But might not necessarily be so we will never know. For 2,i think being a detective or police with higher rank is somewhat I want. So yeah I probably will take the degree. But does taking on with Spf hinder my chances of maybe changing job scopes in the future? Like I know taking criminology is not going to be valuable in the future down the line If I want to change jobs besides journalism. I done have much choice in changing courses beside engineering and it cause I was from a mix of engineering and programming course

Local degree here from sit but the degree is conferred by university of liverpool. They say it's a local degree because the modules are being fitted to Singapore criteria. That's what they told me. So it's local degree since it's in Singapore institute technology but conferred from overseas.

Yeah I can go to local uni. I turned down an engineering course in ntu and a it course in Smu and choose to stick with criminology. Kinda what I want to learn

1) My best understanding is Police will investigate the case & recommend the charge to Deputy public prosecutor (DPP). DPP will charge & lawyer will defend the offenders. The Judge will make judgement. If they need expert, it will be Medical Doctor, professional engineer & etc.

2) I do not understand what are you trying to ask me for this question of "But does taking on with Spf hinder my chances of maybe changing job scopes in the future"? SPF have the right to deploy in any vocation and any job scope to you even you do not like it. Once you quit the force, you are free to do what you want.

3) End of day better know what you want for degree in order not to waste time & money that does not help you get a job you want.

Well, you need to balance between taking a course you want to learn and taking a course at a local uni that has better recognition
