I am currently poly year 2 and I am interested in signing on in the army as intelligence or combat engineer(mostly cause of the $$), but I am clueless about what they do during the 3/4 years of signing on. I have a few questions in mind..
1) how are the hours like?
2) what do they do during working hours?
3) is it true that people on top will come bully u and treat u like ****
4) how tough is the 3 years?
5) is the work worth the $$ or am I better off going to uni aft NS and finding a job
Anyone with previous sign on experience can help out? Thanks alot

My encik told us during our BMT...

Before he sign on...the road ahead looks bright.

After he signed on...the road ahead turned dark.

1) how are the hours like?

As a military organization, there is no hard and fast rule on working hours. Working on weekends or on weekday till late nights is a norm. Just don't expect 8-5 job.

2) what do they do during working hours?

Depends on your vocation. The fact of being in SAF will force you to do more than what your job requires of you. For example if your unit is task to be part of NDP / YOG / Sea Games you need to work with civilians.

3) is it true that people on top will come bully u and treat u like ****

No. How you are treated is your action that causes people reaction. It does not make sense for the top to bully you, but if you feel that being assigned more work is bullying then just too bad.

4) how tough is the 3 years?

It's just a matter of how you adapt and learn how to go with the flow.

5) is the work worth the $$ or am I better off going to uni aft NS and finding a job
If you're in for the money. Forget it.

Addition to point 5. Take note there are now a over supply of undergads, n many has yet to find a job. There are also many retrenchment or contract-based career now too in private and public sectors.

I can only say tha if u have the little military passion and wanting a stable career, go for it. Else, go for other uniformed services.

Depends on what u sign on as. Navy, RSAF & SAF got different job scope. For me as a ex-RSAF, my reservist was in the intelligence.

A number of people said to not sign on for the money... but most people look for a job precisely for the money. I don't think being a regular is that tough, considering what I witnessed during my NSF time at least. It's not like most people are happy in their current jobs anyway. Having said all that... I'm actually also considering signing on even though I hated the army during my NSF time.

Hope it's not too late to answer your questions.

1) how are the hours like?

Based on ranks. For at least the first 3 years (SCT to 1SG), you will be living the NSF life as you're only a platoon sergeant. Basically all weekdays are in camp, booking out at 5pm on Fridays and booking in on Sunday night or Monday morning. Weekends are also burnt by duties, which is around twice a month.

Once you hit SSG and become a company sergeant major onward, life will be 8-to-6 unless there is outfield/recall/activation.

2) what do they do during working hours?

As a WOSPEC, you will be in charge of the discipline of the men. Planning wise will be limited to day-to-day errands. Outfield command is limited to ensuring that your platoon commander's instructions are followed.

3) is it true that people on top will come bully u and treat u like ****

Not necessarily. There are good people and there are bad people, just like the outside world.

4) how tough is the 3 years?

You will have to sign on for a minimum of 5 years to enjoy the maximum benefits. Toughness depends on vocation and unit. The tougher your vocation/unit, the higher chance for promotion.

5) is the work worth the $$ or am I better off going to uni aft NS and finding a job

Depends. If you're an average employee, signing on is better. If you're an outstanding employee or have some highly demanded skills, outside world better.

Misc info:

Sign on bounty for diploma holders: $25000
Starting pay as CBT SCT: $2100
Pay as 3SG: $2500
Annual bonus of at least 2 months and up to 5 months. Average is 3 months (1 month each of AWS, CS & PB)
Leave Entitlement: 14 days
Other benefits: 10 month bonus on your 3rd year in service
