Hi, I am currently pursuing my degree in Cyber Forensics and Business Information Systems (Double Major), and holding a full-time job as a database administrator.

I am considering on signing on with either the Air Force or Army but not sure is there any vocation that requires real IT skills and knowledge. I tried calling the army recruitment centre hotline but the person over the other end only recommended me to sign as Military Expert.

My previous rank is CPL and yet to get my degree, so I could not sign for the ME4 (degree route) and have start all over again from ME1.

My question is, is there any vocation that requires IT savvy guys like us, as I do not wish to lose what I have learn since my polytechnic till now. And also, is it possible to change the package that is being sign and “upgrade” the pay after I have gotten my degree.

I know DXO is also an option but have been trying it for 2 years now and was never shortlisted.

Is there a reason why you want to sign on?

Why are you against the MDES scheme?

I am not against the MDES scheme. I’m just saying that the person just response to me by saying you can sign on as Military Expert without much explanation.

Then when I ask him the question on the “job scope”, he just say after signing on then you will know.

Not being very noble. I just want to have job stability with bonuses to come. Been working in private sector for 2 years and finds that having the government as “boss” is way better than privately owned business’ boss.

No matter how much the company make, the same old reply of company is not doing well so this year no bonus will surface.

End of the day, it’s just a job to make end meet.

I don't think government jobs are that "iron rice bowl" nowadays. Working as a civil/public servant in a non-military role is very different you know...

Maybe you shouldn't be looking for a new company...

I understand what you meant there. In current context, constant upgrading is a must in order not to lose the rice bowl.

Anyway, back to the question. Is there any vocation that really requires IT skills and knowledge?

I know signaller requires to know things like networking, subnet etc. but I have little interests in it. I’m more towards databases or cyber forensics or cyber security type of things.

Well if you have plans for the money that you can save up and don't touch. SAF short term bond can be useful. Since you can save quite a sum provided that you don't club etc.

The money saved can be used in a way rather meaningfully. I've seen friends that signed the bond to get bonuses, on their way, did financial risk assessments etc.

Waiting for times like end of last year, every time oil prices drop, they buy some, in the span of 6 months, 180k kind of profits. It takes studying though. Not for everyone. If you have a business plan, the bond money is good too.

If not, you need to think, if you exit midway, you just lost 2 years of competition with people of the same age.

To be quite frank, even if have it stuff, dun think u will have chance to utilize what u have learn. As the main core of it in mindef is outsourced and there is a stat. board for it. Service delivery usually is done by a out sourced vendor.

You could also consider signing on as a Military Police (MP). MP Command runs the Special Investigation Branch (SIB) where your skills would be put to practice. There's also the ISB in MP Command which imo does pretty cool things where your forensic and IT skills will definitely be put to good use (this is also a classified unit, you can find out more about it if you qualify).
