The effect of airflow direction and air channeling inside computer chassis

The “Air Penetrator” series fans dramatically improve airflow efficiency over traditional fans. The combination of fan blades twisting air into the swirl-shaped fan grille forces airflow to tumble forward in a circular fashion that virtually eliminates dead spot. The air penetrator’s airflow is vastly more focused, and can reach much further as well. This design is also superior to adding a honeycomb grille on a traditional fan because there is one less obstacle for air to travel through.

The Truth About Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) Fans

osi3h5m494u12ij6g.jpg

Lifespan & Noise: Fluid-dynamic fan bearings have the greatest lifespan -- ranging anywhere from 100,000 hours on the low end (40-70C) to upwards of 500,000 hours, depending on the fan selected.

These hours are all projections from tests performed in reliability labs, of course, which simulate the stress a fan would receive by using varied test methodologies -- but that's an entirely different article.

Fans using fluid-dynamic setups remain very quiet throughout the entirety of their life. As a quick comparison, two fans that we used in our noise level test rig are spec'd like this:

PHP:
Bearing Spec Sleeve	Fluid/Hydro
Operating RPM (Controlled)	1200RPM	1200RPM
Noise Level (Variable) ~22dBA	~18.7dBA
Operating Temperature (Controlled)	50C	50C

  • Mounting: Fluid fans can be mounted in any direction without hiccup.
  • Performance: Fluid-dynamic bearings are made for high-performance rigs; they are generally preferred for sustainability and relative silence, while pushing the same or more air (measured in CFM) as other fans of their range. These fans tend to run a bit more expensive - a couple bucks on the consumer level - but are worth it for anyone wanting an ultra-quiet system.
  • Additionally: Maglev bearings are another technology that attempts to approach silence in fans, but they are not yet widely used and are not covered here.

This is a lot of work for fans. So what fan should I buy?

If your case has fans that are 140mm and larger, you shouldn't experience any intolerable noise levels (just buy fans that are between 19dBA and 25dBA); however, if you've budgeted yourself to a cheap case and are restricted to two or three 120mm fans, it's probably worth getting a better fan like this.

Mixed fan blade design - AP123

hogbzryxsp3mw5s6g.jpg

The AP123’s most distinctive feature is its mixed fan blade design. Thicker blades have better air pressure performance while thinner blades have better airflow. By mixing three different types of fan blades, the AP123 can achieve more balanced overall performance for air pressure and airflow.

Unique air channeling ability - AP121 & AP123

Unlike most fans that are designed for higher airflow rating on paper, SilverStone’s Air Penetrator fans are designed to channel airflow more effectively. By pushing airflow forward in a circular pattern, it reaches farther and helps to better cool components inside a case.

How airflow can be affected by air resistance. With the fans sucking fog out of the test box, you can see clearly the AP series can direct air in a much more focused column.

SilverStone used superior bearing with Fluid Dynamic Bearing for longer life and quieter operation.

AP121 & AP123 uses premium Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) for longer life span than normal fans. FDB also provides exceptional smoothness and quiet operation over its life span.

Blue UV effect of AP121 & AP123

AP121’s cool blue UV looks are back with the AP123! The fan blades are UV reactive and produces glow-like effect when in the presence of UV light.

I have also read that by adding an airflow straightener to your case fan, you can have a focused airflow too.....

A 2009 video testing the nexus beamair....

starting is without the beamair...
next is with beamair... temp went down about 5C...
last part is without beamair again, temp went back up....

The problem is how to mount this rubber?
