Dear SIM GE Kor Kor/Jie Jie,

Like many who failed to make it local uni every year, I am contemplating a quality education with one of the many uni partners which SIM collaborate with. Don't get me wrong, I hold SIM degree in high regards, it is due to my financial issues that I prefer local uni over SIM GE (local unis have more financial aid, not cool story bro). Now that local uni is a bygone dream, I decide to consider alternatives. I have a few concerns which I hope you will answer it.

1. What are the types of financial aid available? I know there is bank loan but it requires the guarantor to be employed and earning specific amount of income.

2. Are the degrees recognized if I wish to further further study ie postgrad education?

3. Haven't thought of it yet.

1. I think citibank has student loans for SIM, but interest rate not low.

2. Yes but doesn't mean you will definitely be accepted lol. UOL definitely can further overseas.

more reputable unis would require at least a 2nd uppers for post grad studies.

Yes as a SIM UOL student I do agree local Us have advantages over us in terms of employment, internships and exposure. However, work hard and do not be disheartened because there are many late bloomers.

haiz.. because I no $$$... If study local uni got bursary, tuition loan, study loan, living allowance loan all that. Who knows I might get a scholarship!

But if study SIM, I am not eligible for loans liao... parent not working, who want to take the risk be guarantor.

This applies to degrees obtained full-time or part time, through distance-learning or twinning programmes, etc. Professional qualifications such as law and accountancy from foreign institutions also need to be recognised by the relevant professional body in Singapore to be considered for appointment.

Appreciate your reply. I would like to clarify on question 2 that from my personal observation, SIM degrees are not really recognized in civil and public service.
Take for example, one degree holder apply to MOE but he is placed on the diploma scheme of service wor.

I am interested in working in public sector, that why I would like to know.

recognition and preference are two different things. anyway, if you get a UOL 1st class, things will be different too.

Government is not the only area that can give them job. I'm sure many student have seen most of the lecturers at private institute holding local uni cert and more in those private sector e.g. banking, etc, some have being working for more than 20 years at the private sector with no intention of joining public sector, which i think it is a choice of individual's preference, not a necessity that they need a job and depend solely from the government side.

what i'm trying to say is if even the singapore government don't believe in graduates produced from singapore universities, then no one else in the private sector would believe in the quality of these graduates.

it only makes (political & financial) sense that the government take care of its own interests. nus/ntu/smu are semi-government entities afterall (despite claiming to be autonomous/independent). they are funded by tax dollars and the government has an inherent responsibility to make sure that the employment statistics for the local schools look good.

they don't have a responsibility for uol or any distance learning school. in fact, if you look at things as a zerosum game, it is to the government's interest that distance-learning schools don't do as well.

look at the number of internships that the civil service provides to nus/ntu/smu and you will understand already. its the same in almost every other country. foreign governments also tend to hire grads from their own universities because of familiarity and because of national interest.

tbh, some local grads are so un-streetwise that if the gov don't hire them, they really will be jobless.

don't agree though.. SG scholarships are getting harder to obtain with their stringent selection process.
