Sorry for the late response as I'm currently overseas. To answer your question, the curriculum unlike poly or other uni, there's a fixed timetable. Lessons everyday Monday to Friday 2 slots available. Each 3 hours. You can't choose. 8.30-11.30 or 12-3. On certain occasions it will be a full day lesson maybe due to project works and the cirriculum but kinda rare maybe once per sem tops. Some days the slot might be 12-3 or 3.30-6.30. Kinda rare this happens when the admin is slow in fighting for classroom slots.

There are no tutorials lessons but the lecturer will be open for after class questions. And there will be tutorial questions to practice, so no worries. Some lecturers are very engaging too.
For the first day, I think usually it's around 9am or 10am. It's good if you can go for firs day as they will brief you on your upcoming schedules and let you know your groupings which stick to you for 2 years.

The school is kinda strict on attendance but I personally feel that missing the first day is ok but you may find it abit hard to make friends on 2nd day as some clique might form. But no worries, as long as you know which group you belong to its fine. I met my bff on day 2 there will be some group works so you can make friends easily.

The academic consists of both group work or exams or both for big core mods. Each mod last for 2 weeks, means you will be studying the same mod for 2 weeks. I find this good.allows me to concentrate and understand. This also shows another point that why they make attendance 100% as each lesson is important. Miss 1 and you'll regret. All lecturers are air flown. No locals.

Unlike other private uni. This allows you to make friends easily. Cons of this uni is you cannot choose timetable. But if you mix with friends from the other group you can crash their class making full use of your time but not recommended. Also, sometimes have Saturday lesson which happens 3 times in my entire course. Important to note that always voice out if you feel there's any biasness. The admin coordination is abit poor at times due to the time difference is miscomms due to new admins. They can screw up pretty bad. But overall it's not bad as you get the chance to go to Birmingham for graduation ceremony.

If you need help in deciding whether to join Birmingham I can tell you my honest feelings about this school. But I did not regret coming here as I made real good friends here. Although the there are bad things but it's still a good school.

If you need help in deciding. Ask yourself this, what you hope to achieve from getting this degree, do you seek high grades or experience, what career you looking for? I can honestly tell you I feel there's a number of marketing content and we took econs twice haha. But the second econs is fun. I suck at poly econs but here it's not so bad.

Thanks! I think the course is considered not bad. Most of the lecturers are great and the uses uk style of teaching. Imo i think quite tough but not as bad as UOL i guess. You need to do a lot of readings and be a pro at referencing hahaha. My english is not that good thus, struggling abit but it wont be that bad. At least got second class. I'm not struggling between 2nd upper and lower.

The structure of Bham allows you to feel at school, know people. Rather than UOL, school>lesson>home. I took biz mgmt so not too sure about IB. The price for your batch increases. For my batch IB did not hit 40k, but near 40k.

Birmingham dont go for GPA, they follow the UK style by grading. So it means that every point counts. Unlike in poly, is GPA. They will take the avg of all the score to determine which class you belong to. But i last heard they gonna implement GPA system, but no idea how soon.

From my friends, the experience in birmingham campus itself is great. Nice dorm, nice weather (winter), nice campus. But an advise, do not tour too much. Alot people are lacking for their projects and handing up late (-5marks). UOB itself there will have curriculum that needs to go touring.

Year 2 on birmingham campus studying. Year 3 have the choice of studying or intern overseas. most of my friends who are studying are setting sail this week. Some start as early as jan.

Anyway, i'm did not regret coming here. And welcome to UoB junior
Side note, the admin can sucks at times so be prepared but they're helpful. AND! We have 7k words of dissertation (year 3) and avg assignment is 2.5k words

You may wanna read the top part as some answers your question. Overall, i think it's not hard to score well, but hard to score very well. first class is 70 and above. passing is 40. very few people score 70 and above and usually the score seldom go pass 80 unless is finance or accounting related.

There are 2 kinds of groupings, first they will split the cohort into group 1 and 2 (that's fixed for eternity). second is assignment groupings, which they will usually assign and where you make new friends. On rare occasions like year 3, they will let you choose yourself. You will expect min presentation, and usually when they let you choose is those mini group assignments which are lame at times haha.

You can secretly switch your timetable but you must tap at your allocated timeslot. but i wont advise that as its rude to the lecturer.

Attendance is 100% as they say. Else you may have problems.

So I'm wondering for all the prep course peeps! Did they mention anything? I called them and was very vague answer! So just wanna confirm! Don't wanna miss out on prep if I have to!

based on my experience, you need to force them. email them perhaps. I remembered i asked them if i need prep course every week lol. But if you got the offer letter and they did not mention prep course i think it should be fine. Usually, how SIM do stuff is they will only inform you 1 week before anything happens. So do check your mail regularly.

It's totally random. Not name nor background. They always have a random system to allocate the groups.

As a graduate, tbh i can't really compare how it fare against other sim degree like UOL or RMIT. But so far, my close friends have not much issues in finding a job. Most of us have gotten jobs with or without experiences. I do know of a UOL graduate who got the same pay as me in the same company in different dept. But if your concern is the degree itself i guess not much of an issue i guess. Since so far no one asked if i'm from SIM. But i think what the school teaches and prepares me for like the assignments and lesson learnt from lecturers helped me somewhat during the interview process.

Ehh... btw are you talking about the Birmingham campus itself or the SIM one? You do know that SIM have CCAs but it's not exclusively for any uni but for the entire school. But we do have our student union which manages like xmas parties, freshmen orientations etc. Frankly speaking, uob is not famous. In fact when you tell others "I'm studying in the university of birmingham" people will go huh? where is it? So famous maybe not. But those who are in the working society, those better educated people, some may know uob. So the term famous really depends entirely on how you view it.

For instance, i chose uob because it is not as well-known as uol or rmit. uob is like university of buffalo. small intake in SIM, hardly any existence haha. but this is what i like about it. no one will really link you to sim. Your selling point? I do projects and assignments in class not solely on exams. My lecturers are all from the UK, so all our lessons are strictly monitored by the uob campus. What we do here are similar to those peers in the uk.

Not sure if i answered the questions you guys answered but any more clarifications needed just shoot away!

I'm so sorry for the late reply. Nowadays busy with my new job and adjusting to the company. To answer your questions. Basically UoB have 2 weeks of christmas break (last 2 weeks of Dec). If you're a BM student, you'll have holiday from Mar-July(start of school), if you're lucky and exams are pushed forward, your holiday can start as early as feb. Like mine this year.

I will not suggest skipping lessons. UoB apparently have strict attendance policy, they will literally hound you down. But alternatively you can ask someone to tap card for you. However, i must warn you, this is not recommended as you will be missing out a lot of lessons. Each module runs over a span of 2 weeks straight. Also, some modules may require you to have group projects, some counted into the score some not. So it's hard to gauge. Unless you have your time table with you i can advise you roughly if that module have projects or not. Group projects and presentations are usually to be completed within the 2 weeks span, eg. day 1 & 2 group formation. day 3,4,5,6,7,8 prepare project content. day 9/10 presentation day.

Ohhh congrats on your interview! How did it go? Sorry for the late reply. Been quite busy. The mods are not bad, but as business goes along, you can see the linkage. Some lecturers are good, some are bad. Some they are good at researching but bad at lecturing. But overall most of them are good! But do not be deceived by some of them. Some good on the outside but when grading, they are nasty.

The lecturers are from UK, like i always say, imported. Therefore it justifies the course fees. School life can be pretty hectic but it can be fun. Unlike other simge schools, the school group us differently for different mods, therefore you get to know most of the people in your group. At the end of the 2 years, it can be bitter sweet, but you most of the people in your group know one another. but just a matter of whether you're close or not.

An advice from a senior. Please do not leave your assignments last minute or you'll have sleepless nights. And they are very strict on plagiarism. If you have any issues with referencing and citation can let me know. For timetable wise, refer to my response below.

Hi!! Congrats on accepting! Hope your batch mates will be fun like mine. I have the same questions when i first joined the school. To answer your question. I have no idea how your timetable runs as it changes from batch to batch. But for my batch, on the avg, each day only have 3 hour lesson either 8.30-11.30 or 12-3. Sometimes when the admin sucks, you'll get class from 3.30-6.30, but that's pretty rare, maybe twice per year? or one mod per year.

For the allocated timeslot, you have to tap your card. you can crash class but i dont recommend cos i felt it's rude towards the lecturer. But if there's a need, you can ask your closes friends to tap for you, provided you dont get caught and its not manual attendance day. Everyday have lessons, impossible not to have unless it's PH. The full sem timetable will be out in the beginning so no worries planning your work schedule. I do know i have friends that work part time and still manage to handle pretty well.

Just an update here. Recently got back my results. For all my juniors. Work hard for the dissertation. It's worth 20 credits and can really pull up your marks!!
Anw fret not. Getting 2nd upper is easy if you put in enough effort

Hi, I am starting school in July! (Business management) May I ask how are the lecturers like? For example their way of teaching and do they expect a lot of class participation? Is class participation graded?

Is the orientation similar to poly and is there usually a camp? Are we grouped according to our classes during orientation?

Lastly, how do we know which textbooks to buy? For my diploma in Simge I bought a few and we didn't really use them. Does UOB provide printed notes or do we have to print them?
