Now is 2023.
Last year 2022, I accompanied someone to SIMBA's
Kaki Bukit service centre -- to do
prepaid porting to SIMBA postpaid $10 plan.
We were told by the SIMBA counter staff that --
there needs to be sufficient money in the prepaid balance -- for the porting (to postpaid) to be successful.
(Personally, I wasn't aware of such requirement -- and I didn't bother to verify w/ IMDA about this.)
At that time the person's prepaid balance was less than $0.50 -- so we were advised to top up.
If it is true that the minimum top up amount is required in the prepaid balance when doing prepaid to postpaid porting...
And the prepaid balance happens to be below this amount prior to the postpaid porting -- then unfortunately for the case of Singtel prepaid -- $11 is the minimum top up amount (nowadays).
I have a feeling that the simba staff is trying to play safe.. it could be possible some people come with almost/expired sim cards, trying to port over and failed, then blaming simba for losing their number..
since every telco method to check balance is different, some might not have the prepaid app as well, to ensure smooth porting, the easiest way is to do a minimum amount topup.
Unless someone successfully ports over with $0 balance, we cant confirm if its a scam or not. But I really doubt you need a balance to port over, from the above information...
My Starhub (Prepaid) line:
Have not topped up for more than a year. Instead, have extended the validity of wallet via *123*200# by deducting $1.40 every 90 days. Remaining value in wallet = $6.16, expiring on 14 Dec 2023.
Last week, sent an online enquiry form to Starhub, to check whether my line is still “active”, whether I need to top-up my wallet before initiating the porting out, & how many working days ahead of wallet expiry date must I initiate the porting out?
Starhub’s e-mail reply: (1) My line is still active, (2) Silent on whether need to top-up wallet, (3) Suggest to port out before your main wallet expires (never answer my specific question on how many ahead)
On 5 Dec 2023 morning, initiated the request from MAXX App to port in the Starhub (Prepaid) line. Within 10 minutes of request, received SMS notifications from both telcos that the request will be processed on 5 Dec 2023. By noon, received SMS from both telcos that “Your request is approved…will be service disruption of up to 3 hours from 11pm during the porting process”. On 6 Dec 2023 morning, received SMS from Maxx that “your number has been successfully ported into MAXX.
Anyway, Starhub's min. top-up via Shopee is $2, so my wallet bal. of $6.16 is still sufficient, even if there is indeed an unwritten requirement of maintaining min. bal. before porting out.
But I think the safest way is, a few days before porting out: specifically ask (via e-mail for record purpose) your prepaid telco whether your prepaid line is "active" & can be ported out based on your available wallet bal. Wait for the reply first before initiating any porting out. For MAXX, even if the porting in is unsuccessful, I can still use the existing MAXX line, but for SIMBA (or other telco) you may lose the $ paid without getting a new line.
