2 or 3 days ago, i dropped in to their service centre (orchard) to ask same question. the guy said they were instructed by IMDA to remove it to encourage people to switch to 4g phones. Then added very dismissively, "anyway now dun need, since everyone got 4G or 5G phone".

he could not understand that the telco makes a decision whether to support the phone or not. VoLTE is a necessary but insufficient pre-requisite, if a telco does not support it, it does not mean the phone is not VoLTE capable.

i pointed out it had nothing to do with 4G, since it is a point-to-point VOIP app, and can even work when phone does not have the simba SIM inside it. he just shrugged and said, "Just buy a new phone."

to me, this removes 1 of the 2 reasons to keep my simba line (the other reason is backup roaming SIM).
(for me, local use, the coverage and speed is really cui, so that is a huge negative)

the app is necessary for countries which may not support my phone.
whether it is true or not that IMDA asked them to remove it, i dunno and can't prove it either way.
anyway, will keep a local copy of the APK in case i factory reset my phone in future.

If you download the app on web, some banks will disallow you to access. They should keep it at playstore for users to download.

nothing to do with whether the app is from playstore or download from the web.

yep, still in apple app store, but removed in google playstore.

i am trying out simba for 5 months, mainly for roaming. next extended trip starts in a week up to end of feb. if good, i'll keep it for the roaming, but definitely not for local use for me. if simba voice service and support is withdrawn (*), there won't be any reason for me to stay.

* pulling the app from google play store could mean either a much better new version (but why pull it before unveiling the new version, unless there are signficant problems/security issues), or it's the first step to ending server support and killing the service.

you might be able to use volte during roaming. not necessary to use voice app.

even if roaming country supports VoLTE calls, it still depends on whether the telco supports the phone.....
if it does, no need the voice app
if not, then voice app is useful.

when not supported, used voip calling eg whatsapp or telegram.

fortunately never needed to make/receive calls from banks etc, as they generally do not use whatsapp or other voip apps.

I encountered couple of times banking app ask me to remove suspicious apps that are not downloaded from playstore. And the simba voice app (in apk file) I downloaded from Simba web raise such a prompt from banking site.

if the simba voice app from simba web raised a prompt from banking site, it will also raise prompt from the same banking site even it is installed from playstore. the point is: the 2 versions are indentical.

Iirc is Maybank (lite). I encountered before from HSBC too I can't remember which app apk. They'll usually state suspicious app detected. Suggest to remove the app. Otherwise the bank app won't function or go ahead with own risk. Something like that. They'll also suggest to download apps only from Playstore (I'm using Samsung devices) and not apk via outside links.

Could be they only sieve out apps not downloaded from Playstore direct. Not sure

which area? i dont test for raining one; have disconnection for others too for train tunnel total cut.
