Taipei Metro has given up on Apple Pay Express Transit implementation. They were supposed to coincide with 2025 card reader upgrades.

What Taiwan’s EasyCard might do is to use their own app with access to Apple’s NFC chip (like what they are allowing in the EU) to emulate the card. This means you have to open up the app before you can tap your phone on the reader, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Meanwhile, paying transit fares with credit cards a.k.a. open loop is expected to be available for Taipei Metro next year.

Mine seems to work again. Just board bus and receive notification from simplygo after alighting.

Not sure when it started working though

Yes, after complaining to them on instagram, it started working again today. There was some problem with the notifications previously.

Japan just only started testing with contactless payment for handful of subway lines but they support JCB, Visa and AMEX, no mastercard. The testing does not included Google Pay, Samsung Pay or Apple Pay, it need the physical card.

Now we are more advanced than Japan but lacking express transit to make it perfect.

In Japan, SUICA / PASMO / ICOCA card can be added to the wallet & use as Express Travel. Not sure why in SG, nothing done for that mode.

Don't think Express Travel function will be implemented in SG

Since our public transport system already accepts Visa and MasterCard credit and debit cards, why would LTA/SimplyGo implement the Express Travel function which only benefits a smaller group of people

Hmmm?

It’s not mutually exclusive what.

why a smaller group of people? Many people got smart phone. Not just restricted to iPhone no?

Samsung phones and watch can already tap in and out without turning on the device's screen or into payment mode.

Express Travel only benefits iOS users but there are more commuters with CC and debit cards who can potentially use it on public transport

Hence not cost effective to deploy another system for a smaller group of iOS users

But that is my personal view

For the minor convenience of not having to look at the phone to scan for Face ID just before gantry. Sometimes it can fail when trying to authenticate during peak hours when there are many people all walking in close proximity, or can be a little dangerous to authenticate while rushing up the escalator just before gantry.

Edit: noticed you mentioned AW, not everyone wears one or likes to do that weird wrist twist.
