Stopover almost usually cheaper than Direct.

Which part of Japan? Fukuoka? Osaka? Sapporo? Narita?

Cheapest now is Vietnam Airlines at SGD$530...

first time going so probably drop by tokyo main town then osaka

Note if you want to go to Osaka and back on the Shinkansen, it is not cheap and you will waste time.

1-way is about USD$100 / pax.

See here - Platt Kodama - One-Way Shinkansen Travel at Great Prices!

Puratto Kodama is slightly cheaper - Cheap Shinkansen Tickets between Osaka and Tokyo

If you want to save the cost of the Shinkansen return trip and your time, you can fly into Narita and fly back from Osaka or vice versa.

Well, the cheapest airfare I've ever taken from Singapore to either Tokyo or Osaka was via AirAsia (transit at KL) and Scoot (transit at Taipei).

Both times were about S$380-S$400 for 2 way journey (Singapore to Japan, Japan back to Singapore), and also includes tax and surcharges.

To me, here's what I feel for a return airfare (inclusive tax and surcharge) between Singapore and Japan (usually Tokyo or Osaka):
below S$500: Really cheap, usually promo period's rates
S$500-S$700: Below Average, still considered cheap.
S$700-$900: Average prices
S$900 onwards: Expensive.

oh why is it a golden week haha

Golden week is when many Japanese will travel across Japan usually to go back to their hometown or for short vacation. The Japanese don't often have vacation days, so Golden week is a good time for them to travel around.

Trains across Japan will have a high tendency of being fully booked, and hotels rates can be more expensive and gets booked out too, and popular attractions will be more crowded than usual.

This is why I tend to avoid visiting Japan during Golden week. Too much of a hassle, and I hate crowds. :)
