Singapore airlines name correction

I typed my friend's name wrongly when booking. I know it's a stupid careless mistake of mine. When I called SIA they told me to pay $50 usd to make the correction and email them the passport scan as verification.

From what I know, minor spelling mistakes up to a 3 alphabetical characters are acceptable right? And I've called them immediately after spotting that error.

Anyone done the same mistake before? Anyone solved this issue before easily?

Called before other full fledged airline, they also charge 50usd

Ask if can put note to indicate the correct name.
