Hi everyone, I'm a mahjong lover but I need some clarifications on a few of the rules.

What are some of the circumstances that a player can dan diao (单钓) and still win game, and when cannot win?

for e.g.
1) I already have an exposed pong of dragon, meaning I already have 1-tai, can I still still win by another player discarding a listening (dan diao) tile, or I have to zi mo then can win, or zi mo also cannot win?

2) I have a ping hu (平胡) on hand, but dan diao, I know cannot win even if other discard my listening (dan diao) tile, but if I zi mo I can still win?

Please feel free to highlight other common circumstances that can/cannot win. Many thanks!

1) u got tai, u wan how hu also can... Just dun hu the wrong tile.

2) u can only zi mo or eat the tile if given by ur upper player then listen to others

then for instance, if my current hand is WWW XXX YYY ZZZ E :

W X Y Z all being common tiles (not dragon, not wind)
E being the eye tile, listening on another E, in this case I'm also dan diao

technically speaking my hand don't have any tais, but potentially I will have 2 tais for pong pong hu.


Like this I have zero tais, can I still dan diao and hu (by zi mo, or by getting any other players' discarded E tile)?

Yes, you can hu even if other player throw. Cos pong pong itself already 2 tais.

For Ping Hu or Chow Ping Hu with no tai (means your flowers are not yours and no animals) U cannot HU if you left 1 card on hand even if Zi Mo.

But of course if you got at least 4 cards in hand been ABC (in sequence) and dan diao eye or kelong, ppl throw u cannot hu but zi mo can, cos what card you draw nobody know.

Can I safely say this kalong and dan diao eye rules are only special and applies to Ping Hu and Chow Ping Hu?

i.e. If I have Qi Yi Se (清一色) and Hun Yi Se (混一色 with no tais) on hand, but kalong or dan diao the eye tiles, I still can win anyhow (zi mo or anyone else discards the winning tile) yeah?

As long when you gamed got tais, it doesnt matter.

I think the idea is, as long as you have 0 tai, and if you 单吊, you must 自摸 to win

I believe if 0 tai, people will either keep big tiles in hope to make 1 tai or make 对对胡 or 平胡

平胡 need wait both sides, cannot middle (4,6 wait 5) or corner (1,2 wait 3)

will the all pongs demote to 1tai instead of 2tais? so from a total of 1+2=3tais or will it become 1+1=2tais?

pong pong hu is standard 2 tais minimum already, doesn't matter if the flower is not your own. Flowers/animals will add the tais accordingly.

Only Ping Hu (without any flowers/animals) 4 tais can be downgraded to 1 tai Chao Ping Hu if you draw any flower (not your own)/animal.

I had to add on in that post mah, cos u didn't explain further that the tai status of the wind tiles depends on the round wind and the seat wind.
