On marine plastic pollution: SG doesn't have an issue with plastic waste. All plastic waste is collected efficiently and incinerated.

On landfill constraints: Once burnt, plastic loses almost all its volume, only minimal soot is left. Negligible contribution to land fill.

On ghg emissions: Plastic is derived from petroleum. If the goal is to reduce ghg, then the direct way is to reduce petroleum consumption which far exceeds the ghg emissions from plastics.

Conclusion: Reducing use of plastic bag is pointless virtue signaling. The only thing this achieves is the feeling of ethical consumption.

I read somewhere Indonesia is big polluter of plastic bags.
SG is so small and population also small. What plastic bag reduction SG can achieve is for show only.
Just so GF can report that she is doing something. It is not meaningful.

I guess it’s biodegradable vs non biodegradable. Always a trade off lah, just whether people will see it as being worth the trade off. Some farkers will think if just them continue with indiscriminate plastic bag use, won’t contribute much to overall environment impact.
Biodegradeable bag release more carbon during production. Singapore burnt all its trash so biodegradeable bag just make ownself feel good about going green worst off then your supermarket plastic bag. Want to go green need to look at the whole process from production to how it got disposed.

I support going green but not fake green campaign to profit from consumers and make ownself look good. This campaign is a good example since NEA still tell us to bag our trash before disposing it. In the end you still need plastic bag which means you just have to buy in bulk. So where's the green part from this campaign?

It is the norm to bring your own recycling bag or shopping bag to supermarkets in other first world countries.

Only in shitpore people kpkb over paying extra 5 cents

Even other countries charge more for bags and people happily pay or jolly well bring their own bag
