Call me swakoo if you like, because I had never used Taobao.

I read somewhere that buying online for some items saves a lot because shops in Sg have to factor in the high rental cost. I bought a racket from China using taobao. Assuming it is authentic (I have no reason to doubt it isn't, the ones you buy in Sg is made in China as well) the saving is S$100. When paying, I have the option of choosing DBS (yes it's logo appears), and for UOB Mastercard, it actually sends a verification code to my mobile phone. For local freight fowarder, I can choose Popstation (yes it's logo appears there as well), which i can self-collect 24/7. Btw, delivery is free. I think many shops will be out of business in future.

Bless Alibaba, bless Ma Yun.

Actually, it really depends on what stuff we are talking about here. Some shoppers really prefer seeing the actual things in shops, feel it, touch it before they buy anything. I think in the end, both side - online n physical shop front will have their own shares of customers. Talking about that me myself buy from Taobao (have my own share of stories of getting substandard goods) as well as buying from retail shops in SG. Pros & Cons

SINGAPORE (Oct 20): CLSA Research has initiated a “buy” call on SingPost with a target price of $2.50.

SingPost, Asean’s top e-commerce logistics service provider, has used the profit generated from its cash-cow mail segment to diversify its business at the right time, says CLSA analyst Paul Wan in the report dated Oct 20.

With e-commerce enjoying rapid growth in Asia, the company has also expanded its geographical exposure in the region, as consumers are no longer restricted by bricks and mortar.

Domestically, SingPost is also providing more services to improve delivery capabilities and cater for the influx of packages.

Rising incomes and more households with access to the Internet have allowed more people to purchase goods online.

Coupled with SingPost’s easily scalable online platform, more companies will move their retail operations online, ultimately driving overall sector growth.

“We expect the group to deliver a 7.5% organic topline CAGR over 2014-16, with an average operating margin of 3.9%,” says Wan.

To be sure, SingPost’s traditional mail business is in decline due to rising internet penetration in Singapore.

But the group’s monopolistic status means this segment will remain highly profitable, with operating margins averaging 27-29% over 2014-16.

“We expect B2C overseas small-package volume to increase and partially offset the fall in domestic volume, while postage tariffs should continue to rise on increasing package size,” adds Wan.

SingPost’s share price is up 37% this year.

But this is a smaller return than its regional peer Sinotrans (598 HK), which has gone up 102% in the same period.

Historically, SingPost’s PB has moved in line with ROE which has been on a downward trend over the past few years.

“We believe ROE has bottomed out and forecast it to reach 23% over the next three years. The dividend payout is stable, at 90%, with a yield of 3.4%. Buy for 38% implied upside to our DCF-based $2.50 target,” concludes Wan.

SingPost is up 1.6% at $1.855 as at 1:12 p.m. Singapore time.:s12:

Can't believe it. I posted on 15 Oct 2014. This news came out on 20 Oct 2014.

SINGAPORE: Consumers who frequent e-commerce platform Taobao Marketplace will now be able to pick up their buys at SingPost's POPStations.

The partnership between Taobao and SingPost for the Self Pick-Up Service means local consumers can opt for door-to-door delivery or can choose to pick up their purchases from more than 70 POPStation locations provided by SingPost.

"We are grateful for the support of SingPost, which allows us to provide a convenient, localised service for our Singaporean consumers in locations across the city," said Mr Simon Qi, Director for International B2C Division at Taobao International.

Taobao added that the first million orders using the International Parcel Forwarding Service during China's popular 11.11 Shopping Festival sales this year in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan will receive their first 1kg order for only 2 Chinese yuan. (S$0.40).

The Self Pick-Up service at POPStation is the first in-depth collaboration between SingPost and Taobao Marketplace Southeast Asia since Alibaba Group invested S$312.5 million in SingPost as part of a “strategic cooperation” aimed at improving the efficiency of cross-border e-commerce.
