Singtel forcing customer to pay more

Just hear this from a friend.

To purchase a LTE model phone you need a Flexi plan or subscribe to an add on data plan.

He was having old classic plan which is $20/mth. Flexi Lite is $39.90. A difference of $19.90/mth. You factor in 2 years contract means an additional of $477.60 for 2 years.

Eg.

If he want to buy Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE with Flexi Lite @ $468. Total he paid will be $468+$477.60 = $945.60.

Buying without contract at Mobile Square is $729.

Either Singtel has got their sums wrong or they deliberately squeeze every penny out from customers.

Or worst! Singtel thinks we are idiots.

You are right, he still need to subscribe to a plan.

But to be forced into subscribing to Flexi plan does not feel right.

He should be able to just buy the phone and have the option of :

1) staying at classic plan, use wifi at home. When out pay as you use data.
2) stay at classic plan and subscribe to add on data
3) upgrade to flexi plan.

He should have the freedon to decide any of the above, not forced into no. 2) or 3)

i dont know if you are stupid or what you are paying 19.90 more per month for 2gb of data every month, which you have excluded. all you are interested is the money coming out of your pocket.

if you want a indepth analysis here it goes:

classic - vs - flexi
-$20 - vs - $39.30 --- difference 19.90 per mth
- cant find the price but should be 100-200 more - vs - $568.00 --- 2 years contract
- no data vs got 2gb data --- boy see the difference

so theoretically you are paying 19.90 for additional 3g service

plus you need to consider TIME VALUE OF MONEY (ie. $1 in 2 years time is not equals to $1 now)

if you discount the 19.90 per mth back to present value. its not 477.60 it should be less. considering inflation and interest rate for the next 24 mths.

and the last most impt thing. there is no point getting LTE phone when u are using classic plan. u cant even surf the net unless u connect to wifi, which defeats the purpose of a smart phone. so before you whine you your brain first.

I want to stress again. This thread is about Singtel forcing customers into plans (flexi). The debate is about us as customers should have freedom of choice.

ok,you have the freedom to choose to jump ship instead of recontract? they just want to phase out those old plans i guess. even if they allow your friend to buy lte S3 with classic plan,i reckon it won't be cheap.

He is one of those who like to get latest phone even though he may not need the features of the phone.

Just like many people buy Smart TV yet never use the internet features, only use it to watch TV programs.

The latest Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2 are all LTE models. Indeed most of latest models in Singtelshop are LTE.

Well, if he likes to have the latest, then he has to be prepared to pay more.
Do let your friend know that he won't need a LTE phone unless he is planning to subscribe to a 4G VAS because it makes absolutely no difference if he is only planning to use only wifi on it.

And no telcos forces anyone to pay more. The choice is still up to the individual. Telcos are just not in the business of price competition with the dealers.

mayb the staff actually meant "To purchase a LTE model phone" n use LTE/4G "you need a Flexi plan or subscribe to an add on data plan.". u may want to clarify.

I use to have a CIS classic plan with $12 per month. I add on a promo Data VAS with 10Gb for another $14. So I was paying net $26 for my subscription but as you know classic plan had no free incoming calls, so my free airtime depleted fast. So typically I pay $50+ for my phone bill for my usage pattern. Then when I renew my contract for S3, with CIS flexi lite , my subscription after CIS discount is $30 with 12Gb data and free incoming. Now my net bill is typically less than $50. So it is actually saving for me on flexi plan.
Therefore it all boils down to your usage pattern to get the best value plan.
In the case of your friend, if he can control himself and use only WIFI, he can be paying out less if he can slso keep within the free airtime bundled. Just take note, there is no free incoming and higher airtime charges during peak hours for classic plan

To be frank, most of ur reasoning is fair except that do u really have to bring in time value of money for such a small amount of money??? U want everyone to calculate using IRR or investment tools for just subscribing to a phone line???
