which one is better? Taking a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Mechatronics from University of Glasgow in Singapore via SIT, which is 2 yrs? or Taking Mechanical Engineering in NTU, which is 4 yrs?

It is hard to say what the employers view the value of a government DL degree but if you can use SIM-UOL as a gauge then you should go to NTU.

University of London is of a higher uni ranking than NTU, just curious, why is NTU preferred? Is it because it is not directly UOL?

UOL is NOT a higher ranking uni.. and please its not a full fledge uni to begin with. Only idiots associate UOL with London School of Economics.

The partnered unis from SIT is much better than SIM DL degrees.. Glasgow has a similar reputation to NTU and I doubt you would go wrong with either since both of them are accredited by MOE. IMO if you wish to work overseas, i feel that the SIT degrees are of a better choice since its unis are much more globally recognize than NTU.

Why is SIT-DL program not ranked? They are using the same lecturers, exact module structure and grading system, bell curve against the european students and modules/thesis to be completed in the home country. The degree is also solely awarded by the university itself (not SIT-UOG/SIT-TUM and etc).

What I am concerned about is the fact that UOG's degree takes 2 yrs while NTU's is 4. Also, as expected from the difference in duration, NTU has many more modules taken compared to UOG. Its hard to believe that the two unis are closely ranked when one requires so much more than the other in terms of time and modules taken.

The programmes in SIT are compressed to 2~2.5 years is b'cos some of the modules have already been covered during the 3 years in polytechnic & there're NO SCHOOL HOLIDAY. If you're a JC student going SIT, I think you'll need 1/2 a year more than ploy student(2.5 years). Similarly, a poly student get direct admission to 2nd year of the programme in NTU.

As an ex-NTU student, I can tell you that getting 1st class honour is VERY difficult as most of those AAA/A students scored NEARLY FULL MARKS for ALL their modules. So if you're a poly student, I suggest you go SIT.:D

Profs from the interview..

Lecturers are transferred from their home campus (for core modules), some NUS/NTU profs (for other modules) while your final grading transcript is 'balanced out' between the students at the respective countries.

This is what i get from the TUM profs.. I assume the type of local lecturers might vary for the different unis as TUM programs are affiliated with NUS/NTU which is already proven by their joint masters program.

Can go google about TUM-NTU/TUM-NUS masters program for their joint teaching system.. its similar to what you will experience in SIT.

I agree with you.. lots of scholars in our local uni so the less theory inclined poly students or even our average A lvl students will lose out there. But it wouldnt be long before it happens the same to SIT/SUTD. Btw I heard that there is a rise of A lvl applicants for SIT this year.

well, it would be nice if U read up the ranking methodology.
how are they using the same lecturers during the same term?
if this lecturer is teaching in UK, is he flying in and out to teach SIT-UOG?
They can always say exact module and structure etc, they are selling a product will they tell U it is not good? or the whats not the same? item in bold already contradict each other.
No DL program today will say degree award by SIT or SIM etc, that has done away for many yrs already. Not something new to hide the difference.

Nottingham etc are done the same with their overseas campus programs, fact is it is not the same.

are U saying grade inflation is more prevalent for UK programs. Where ~10% of the students get 1st class and a greater number say 25% get 2:1 etc? as as long as U are above avg U can get 2.1, if U are around avg 2.2. must be pretty bad to get 3rd class or nothing.

What's the big fuss. Let me shed some light here (wall of text!) :vijayadmin:. I dont blame you guys for not knowing enough.. in fact i was already about to enrol in NTU when SIT suddenly started to expand so i took a keen interest in it.

You're getting the same degree with no variation in the transcript so who cares about the ranking methodology. And yes unlike SIM, SIT is accredited by MOE and the niche programs here are indeed recognized and already tied down with some of the major companies here so jobs wouldn't be a problem (e.g manchester- Singapore Nursing Board, TUM- siemens, shell, wacker, Newcastle- Maritime authority of singapore).

According to a friend, his lecturers/profs are indeed staffs from the host university. They are either transferred or flown back and fourth if their schedule doesnt conflict.

And the main difference between SIT and SIM is that the DL degrees awarded by the former is uniquely tied down from top tier universities and most importantly provided and accredited by MOE and the industries here. It's indeed specialized to the extend that it is meant to be done in Singapore.

SIM, PSB, MDIS programs (university of buffalo, UOL, new york, warwick, south australia and etc) are mainstream, easily available elsewhere in its worldwide distance learning programs and some of them are meant to be degrees only attainable via DL (i.e, not equivalent in their host campus) and hence IMO this is where their value is affected.

You do not hear of german degrees awarded elsewhere in the world (with the exception of their postgraduate programs in NUS/NTU), Digipen's and nevada's second campus uniquely in singapore and etc.

Well i agree that a DL is still a DL but what i am impressed by SIT is that MOE strives to provide close relations between the university and the students here so as not to compromise the quality of education as per provided by the host country itself . Allowing students to complete their thesis / attachment overseas is already a strong move to strengthen the value of your degree and resume.

MOE already stated that it is their first unique degree education structure which differs from the 3 autonomous universities here. I believe this system has their own flaws but in the end of the day you are still getting a degree recognized by the government and not some private institutions.

SIT is certainly recognize by employers out there and there is not a need to justify this very fact.

But, your perception of SIM and other private institutions which offers distance-learning programme is to a certain extent wrong.

The value of a distance-learning degree is not attributed by the fact that there is no other instituitions which offer it and by having only one institution that offers it is not equivalent to the fact that the value of that distance-learning degree is higher. Offering a degree solely via the distance-learning method also does not bring down nor does it affect it's value. Similarly, the distance-learning degree course which is not offered in it's host campus also does not bring down nor bring up the degree's value.

Last but not least, just a question for you. Do you know why distance-learning method exist?

Lol u using your own ranking methodology? Anyway, government directions is to open SIT to bring in niche degrees instead of spending more resource to open new course in local unis.

Just curious, you have something against SIT? Dun worry dude, most of the degrees it offered cannot be found in local uni, it wun affect your elite degree. :)

Wow, come in advertise SIT again & give wrong information? Want to start round 2?

http://digitalsenior.sg/singapore-institute-of-technology-sit-and-its-50-things/
Look at FACT3

https://www.singaporetech.edu.sg/digitalnewsroom/sit-welcomes-students-for-ay201213/
Look out for the term "CAMPUS BLIND"

=====IMPORTANT=====
SIT-OUs degrees are CAMPUS BLIND (MEANING degrees given upon graduation are the EXACT SAME ONES you would receive as if you were a student in their HOME CAMPUS)
In short, SIT-OU degrees are NO DIFFERENT from the degrees undertook DIRECTLY AT THEIR HOME CAMPUS

Now we clarified that SIT-OUs Degrees are HOME-CAMPUSED Degrees NOT "distant learning" or "twinning" or whatsoever

TUM/UoG/UoM etc
ALL ARE LISTED AS RECOGNISED IN MAJOR SINGAPORE ACREDITIONS LIKE PEB
https://www.peb.gov.sg/html/pe_approved.html

=====Is SIT-OU Degrees Local?=====
Since from the ABOVE point, We already said that SIT-OU Degrees are CAMPUS BLIND (HOME CAMPUSED Degrees)

The Degree is conferred 100% by the OU
Therefore it is NOT local degree but an Overseas degree HOWEVER all these OUs are ALL ACCREDITED by Singapore

=====So what's the difference between SIT-OU degrees & Private-OU degrees=====
1. For SIT-OU graduates, graduates are considered to be INTERNAL students of their OUs because the SIT-OU Degree is CAMPUS BLIND (definition above^)

2. For private degree graduates, graduates are considered to be EXTERNAL students of their OUs
Eg. (SIM-UOL)
https://www.google.com.sg/search?q=...UIBigB&biw=1536&bih=759#imgrc=qN5tvG_Z4SVKnM:
It is stated as "studied as an External student"

=====IN CONCLUSION=====
SIT-OU (since its a home-campus degree) is recognise & already Accredited by major Accredition department in Singapore
SIT-OU degrees are NOT considered Local but Overseas degrees

I hope this clears any misunderstanding about SIT-OU degrees
