Hi all,

Has anyone heard of or attended the subject course before? Valuer & Appraisal Programme.

I received an email brochure from NTU about a Business Valuation Certification Programme which caught my interest and attention - mainly because a few months ago I read a local news article which mentioned Business Valuation as one of the Top 5 median salary jobs.

Although the programme fee is a massive 18k, I read that Singaporeans above 40 are for 90% subsidised funding, and remaining course fee can be paid using SkillsFuture. By a quick calculation, it seems we can do this course with no money from own pocket, aside from the registration and candidature fee.

The programme is 18 months on a part time basis, lessons over weekends only. With 5 exams.

Anyone has any experience to share on this programme, and career prospects? Thank you.

After plenty of deliberation, I’ve decided to go for it. The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the next best time is now.

Pros
1) Certificate-based qualification
2) Beginner-friendly, no prior experience needed
3) Robust curriculum over 3 levels and 5 modules.
4) Reputable Training Provider (NTU)
5) 18k base fee but got 90% SkillsFuture subsidy
6) Can use SkillsFuture credit to offset remainder fees.
7) Flexible option of structured learnings vs self-study.
8) A lot of industry supporters, I’m hopeful on the career opportunities.

Cons
1) Some naysayers about SkillsFuture not having strong track record in achieving promotions or securing jobs - I don’t think this is true.
2) Mid career switch is challenging, may have to take a position and paycut, need to think carefully if you have family and kids. Perfect for singles like me.
3) Class time is over weekends, need to put aside time.

The first exam is in May, which I believe will be here in the blink of an eye. If don’t sign up, by May 2025 I may regret. If sign up, I would have moved forward in life.

This course is very cheap after using SkillsFuture credit, but the exams may not be easy to pass.

SAC 22/23 annual report (page 22) shows the number of candidates vs the number of graduates since 2016 when the program was launched.
https://www.acra.gov.sg/docs/defaul...nnual-report-fy-2022-23.pdf?sfvrsn=c980819c_2

You can compare the 22/23 number against the 21/22 one on page 24.

3) Class time is over weekends, need to put aside time.

This one is not a big deal, it is only for 7 days for the first 2 modules and only 2 dates are full days for the 2025 enrollment.

Thank you for sharing information about pass rates.

Would you recommend taking one paper at a time then?

It depends on whether you have a background in finance and accounting + your aptitude for learning new things if this is something new to you. Their website also mentioned they strongly encouraged candidates to complete it within 3 years, so you have to ask them whether this is a hard or soft limit because if you take only 1 at a time, it will take 2.5 years with little buffer left.

The previous syllabus is in levels 1 to 3, so modules 1 and 2 used to be part of level 1, everyone takes them together. The core reading pages from their study material under the old format, without counting those appendices are about 100+ pages for each module 1 and 2. The other thing to consider is whether you prefer theory (qualitative-based) or calculation (quantitative-based) exams. From the looks of it, modules 1 and 2 are still pure theory with minimal to no calculation.

No background, average learner.
When did you take the exam? Can I email you further questions about the exams and career prospects?
