I've noticed a slowdown in business over the past two years. Crowds are thinner, merchandise pricier and shops are staying open past 7pm.

The proportion of Apple-related merchandise is on the rise, and the upper floors are either closed (used as storage/workshops?) or colonized by mobile accessory clones.

Business for computer hardware shops may get worse with the closure of Rochor Centre carpark and commencement of major roadworks in the vicinity.

I see DIY interest fading in the coming years as mobile computing gains the upperhand. It is already transforming into a niche market, and the business will enter into another round of consolidation. Think we'll lose a few players in 2014-15.

Thoughts?

Conspermz. 3 yr back I oreadi predicted it. Bell juz close few mth ago. During me time gt dat, marketplace, m3, skylet, aquest, AI-en. All close liao. U tink which wan next?

Fuwell gt big shop front so high rental. Same 4 cybermind. Video pro n laser n bizgram smaller but still high.
I tink most of big shop on inner ring losin money. If not all. Ony the backlane one can survive. Low rental, sell cheaper, more ppl buy=more revenue. Tradepac, bestbuy, best bargain, pctheme, mynextcom.

Fuwell no more advertise on hwz. Telling.

Me says by 2016 no more shops facing d inner ring of sls Liao.

Bwaysaihump has humped!!

More and more people are buying online simply because it is cheaper.

Shops in SLS unless have good relationship and support with the distros, or have other businesses like export, else you simply cannot survive in SLS.

poor thing. I just went sim lim on a Sat and so quiet and boh lang. the escalator also shut down on some floor.

Sim lim thanks to the first 2 floors reputation with foreigners really chao chao liao.

I think the smart tactics is follow mynextcom, set up one small space and do e-commerce.

i love pcthemes and cybermind shops because of the display but will feel sad once they are gone in the next 2 years. :(

I would say few years from now, there may not be such h/w retail stores. Most likely such stores will switch to online retail only. No need to rent shops, just get orders from online and go distro grab the stocks and deliver to customers :)

SLS is going downhill already..... wonder how long more it can survive....less and less hardware shops.

Long time ago when I went on Sat, its hard to even walk cause its so crowded. Now its so empty......

Those who own the shop spaces will still survive.

Those who doesn't own the shop space might close & run road.
Then consumers will bare the Distributors losses :s22:

Distributors also will close down or slimming down.
