SLS downtrend

SLS so bad on weekends ? I only go on weekdays and off peak hours LOL.. always thought weekend super crowded... but for weekdays i can vouch the crowd is very poor.

Yea, I have been having that mindset all along.

need to reiterate. i bought a casing from distro which i saw at sls for 120 instead of the 155 on paper at sls. i was rmaing a keyboard, just nice i enquire about the case. there they instant gimme the price of 120 since like i make my way down already. not gonna disclose the distro though as im not suppose to. but the story too nice to not share.

I only remember when my younger days I went down to SLS with my dad. He go Lim kopi Istay at 1 shop play ps1. Still remember play king of fighter, marvels vs capcom, and metal slug 1.

Those days 1st floor still pack. Now no more le.

eg challenger. last time only got 1 mega store in funan. but now you see they are all over the place. if you ask me travel all the way down just to hoot from sls, i might as well save the time and effort and just go challenger.

perhaps as one bro says, mobile computing is on the rise. thus challenger has made a good move.

Challenger ya... they opening everywhere... but their items ex... some are still reasonable priced... most are over-priced. But if buy accessories can la... if buy GPU/CPU/MOBO u still need to go down SLS.

SLS still sell cheaper for most things I fancy.

However, there are many non-savvy customers who will patronize Challenger (else how do they survive?).

SLS has a bad reputation, deserved or not. Meanwhile, hardware enthusiasts have always been the minority and are dwindling. For the vast majority of users, they don't know and they don't intend to care about hardware. They just buy whatever that works and/or looks good. Who cares if the PSU is made by CWT or Seasonic? Or whether that 2133MHz ram actually makes a difference? How many people can describe the difference b/w a Haswell and a Ivy Bridge. Or even a Sandy vs Ivy.

This trend of physical shops under assault from online shops is going to continue. Online and cheap shipping and ease of cross borders money transfer have broken many traditional barriers. This trend affects not just the IT consumer industry but many many other industries as well.

We are inching towards the proverbial perfect information n competition. Traditional methods do marketing are crumbling.

If u think this is a cause for rejoice, think again.

This trend affects not only business owners but employees as well. The latter is called crossborder outsourcing.

The thing is this - nobody has yet predicted the outcomes and hence solutions of this trend. What is certain though, is that whoever figures this out will be the masters of the next few decades.

Actually come to think of it, when i travel to BKK anually to visit my relatives, i will drop by at Prathunam Pantip Plaza (Their version of SLS) and walk around. There quite concentrate a lot on DIY PC.

In fact the OEM brands are loosing out over there to DIY. Not sure why but every corner i go i rarely see any shop selling OEM PC. They sell Pre made DIY PC. Which is imo cheaper than the OEM PC. But no OS. One has to go source out for their own OS.

The buying power of the local people there isnt strong, mostly could not afford OEM PC as they are quite expensive. And usually they very rare to come out low end models for the poor to afford. I barely seen any OEM PC that offers like Pentium or Celeron base PC. And worse their service centre is not in BKK city itself. Some are outside of BKK and take days or weeks for service man to service it.

Unlike SG. Many are still buying OEM PC. Making DIY PC a smaller market demand. Only enthusiast or existing owners that uses DIY PC will reconsider to buy components from SLS. Other than that after doing much quotation for Forumers whom wanna get a DIY PC, only a handful are new to DIY PC.

So it still boils down on how DIY PC shops or Distro marketing it.

Of course must be overpriced lah, look at the amount of staff they have in each store

Their normal sticker price = +10 to 40% mark-up
"Member price" = +5 to 10% mark-up
"Challenger sale" = actual RRP
"Challenger clearance sale" = the only time below RRP

I second this. And they will be willing to match prices at times. So it saves the trouble of going down to SLS nowadays.

To be honest, with the rental going up locally, it is increasingly difficult for biz to survive/ compete. Now they have to compete not just locally, but also abroad. It is so much easier for people to compare prices and purchase abroad.
