Any recommended software to install? Basically I want to understand my computer usage and temperature better.

I am currently using MSI | Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and CPU-Z MSI.

So far CPU utilization @ 94% the temperature is 48 degrees. it this normal?

Your MB should have a CD for MSI Control Center. You can also download the software from MSI. Easy to use and quite informative.

Were u running any background apps?

Though its still fine though.

Next I will say hwinfo might be a good apps for u check the hw status live. Next is speedy(nv really like it. Used once and uninstalled)

Side note: these apps dun tell u which parts is dmg or any super ai status check apps. Most of the time troubleshooting is the best that u try to find out where the faults lies.
