The AirPods Gen 1 received a Software Update.
They should update automatically when your AirPods are near your iPhone.

To check if you're on the latest Firmware, make sure your iPhone is connected to your AirPods.

Settings ➡️ General ➡️ About ➡️ Scroll down until you see your AirPods.
Tap on it, it should state version 6.3.2

If it's not updated.

1. Place AirPods into charging case
2. Charge the charging case
3. Ensure iPhone is on WiFi and keep it close to the AirPods.
4. Wait...

It should happen, there's no knowing when.

do AirPods still connect to phone when the casing is closed? i thought it has to be opened, charged and phone has to be navigated to about>AirPods, then update begins?

Perhaps your above method allows phone to pre-download the file then update it when the case is opened?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mine was magically 6.3.2 when I viewed it.
My friend's was magically 6.3.2 when she didn't even charge the AirPods. (She also wasn't even on the latest iOS)

Don't have to charge. It will update once they are in range and more than 50% battery.
