Did a restore then restore from backup as suggested.

Darn wow. My memory went from 6.2GB free to now 8.5GB free. Can't believe it.

i have updated but back up and restore will work too?

anyone has issue with message tone alert ? i have this problem which happened intermittently sometimes no alert tone when message come in .. not on "do not disturb " mode . on latest software version

The "other" memory went down by a significant chunk.
Was shocked myself.

Just make a backup, then restore iPhone. After that during setup just restore back the previous backup.

setting > general > usage > messages

anyone notice after clearing the message from inbox, the memory will never reduce

and also sometimes in subsequent time i can't pull down the notification bar

not sure is ios 7.1 bug or it has happened since ios 7

By "message from inbox" I assume you actually meant mail. Messages refers to iMessage and sms, reduction of storage space taken is reflected pretty quickly after clearing/deleting them (without needing to restart). Emails and attachments, on the other hand, is grouped under Mail.
