Well, to preserve battery life, sometimes 2G is really enough.

Of course from technology pov, 2G is really outdated. South Korea has already phased out 2G to free up the spectrum for 4G. So Singapore is in a similar situation, just a few years later.

imo, 2G uses up more battery.

This can't be as SingTel doesn't support 4G voice/VoLTE on iPhone.

It just did with iOS 9.1.

Before it, only able to select 4G, 3G or 2G. With iOS 9.1 now, there's a choice of Voice & Data, Data only or off.

Apple probably thinks that no one uses 2G (and it's true) so they removed it. Not that ur screen cracked after the software update, don't need to scrutinise every changes.

the 2G, 3G, 4G selection settings is configured by the Carrier(singtel, starhub, m1) and not apple.

updating to 9.1 might have defaulted it.
I hope the Telco pushes for updating Carrier Settings eith 2g/3g/4g selection

SINGAPORE: All three telcos in Singapore - M1, Singtel and StarHub - will pull the plug on 2G services from Apr 1, 2017, the companies said in a joint press release on Monday (Jun 15).

The mobile operators will cease 2G voice, messaging and data services, and the spectrum currently used for the network will be used to provide faster, more advanced 3G and 4G services to cater for consumers' increased demand for mobile data and faster access speeds, they added.

err if i'm not wrong, 4g calls only work across phones which support it n must b on e same telco...

4G call for now only works for the 6s series phone but if you call anyone be it they on only 3G network or fix line network, your iPhone 6s or 6s+ network still remains on 4G. If not, either your phone is not 6s series or telco don't support or carrier software not updated. Try update to 9.1 if you are on 6s series.

It has already been working since the iPhone 6 as mentioned previously. You need to enable it in the cellular setting (4G>Voice and Data). Obviously your telco has to support it too.
