critical zero-day vulnerabilities - whats this actually?

Apple released an update to iOS 9 on Thursday—iOS 9.3.5—that patches multiple critical zero-day vulnerabilities that have been shown to already have been deployed, allegedly by governments to target activists and dissidents, according to a report from Citizen Lab and Lookout Security. Apple turned around an update within 10 days from when the company received Citizen Lab’s initial report. The update is recommended immediately for all iOS 9 devices.

When used together, the exploits allow someone to hijack an iOS device and control or monitor it remotely. Hijackers would have access to the device’s camera and microphone, and could capture audio calls even in otherwise end-to-end secured apps like WhatsApp. They could also grab stored images, tracking movements, and retrieve files.

Some of the exploits may have been discovered months ago or longer, so there’s no way to know how widely they’re in use, but details suggest these active exploits in previous versions of iOS 9 weren’t in wide use and were deployed against individual targets.

These exploits are dead scary. I have opened countless text messages links since 2013. Our phones may have already been compromised in some way or another. The mentioned target audience might very well be a decoy just to allay consumers' fears.

I rather they release when ready & not rush.

Remember the ios 8.x which killed cecullar? I used to laugh at Microsoft releasing updates that fixed 1 problem but created 3 new ones. Although apple not that terok but their updates like not as solid as before. So i for one rather they return to the old days.

Test until siao. Rock solid then release. No point rush to make ppl happy then later must patch here patch there.

U've got a point. Ever since after Steve Jobs, their updates are more like MS, more frequent. But what I meant is not to release anymore updates until iOS 10 is officially good to go. But seems like 9.3.5 is a critical security update for some hackers stuff.

I don't know what is the complain of updates about. Apple is simply patching security flaws here. If you want less update, perhaps android is the way to go. We should credit Apple for patching the security flaws swiftly unlike google and their respective oem with "promise" montly security updates

it is actually good to have regular iOS update

only time time they mess up was on iOS8 updates which causes wifi issues that I am not able to connect to my home router
