wah TS your question very general unless you gave us your preferred things to do/see and your duration of the trip. All my Thailand trips are solo backpacking, been to the Island, sea, cities and lands. Only place I would like to go is up north, but couldn't find the time and don't have the luxury to do a 1 month backpacking trip to explore more of Thailand.

i really enjoy trekking in nature, especially day long treks on a hill, waterfalls, white water rafting. Stuff that cannot be found here in SG. I'm thinking of skipping bangkok cuz there's nth much there that interests me and heading straight to Chiang Mai. It seems to have exactly what i'm looking for and at a cheap budget.

my main concern is like if its safe. anyone had any bad experiences there before ?

Hallo ... you first timer and u claim nothing in BKK ...

when u go backpack, remember never condemn a place unless you explore it ...

There are many thing just outside bangkok ...

thats y i suggest you go from north to south or south to north...

avoid tourist areas and you see lots of fun ...

Perhaps krabi might suit you. Can trek to the viewpoint, free climbing to the secret lagoon, and many other water activities plus sightseeing.

Thailand is pretty much safe, but basic precaution still applies no matter which part of the world you are at. I only gotten scammed money that's all, no physical harm or traumatizing experience (except entering a walking street for the first time). :s13:
