Hi, i was in kaohsiung for the whole of last quarter of 2015, hopefully can give you some good advice:)

1. Public bikes in kaohsiung needs to use the ipass, it is a hassle for tourists to go register for it. Just use your Master/Visa instead. Otherwise, I would recommend u rent from the shops there. Rates can be as low as 50-100 twd per day if i rmb.

2. If you are not going to take the trains to travel to tainan, chiayi etc. then i will recommend u find a hotel near central park mrt station or yanchengpu mrt station. These venues are very accessible to the attractions!

3. Places to go: Shinkuchan (xinjuejiang), Cijin island, Dragon and tiger pagoda, pier 2 art centre, banana pier, sanduo shopping district, ruifeng night market, liu he night market (some places off the top of my mind), kenting (not in kaohsiung, take a cab there)

4. Airbnb is very safe in taiwan, just find those with good reviews! same goes for kenting

Thanks for the sharing. Btw Kaohsiung got any nice places for night scenery?

I would say love river (ai he) is pretty good! cijin island as well. basically anywhere in sizihwan is good as it is sea-facing.

There is an area below the british consulate museum of takao, directly outside the entrance of sun yat sen university, where there is good view of the sea too. But that area may be a bit hard to find for solo tourists, haha.

I believe the best method is to travel to sizihwan by mrt/bicycle and take the ferry from the port there. The port is very prominent and it is unlikely you will miss it. Furthermore, the ferry fee is very cheap. if i rmb correctly is about 35-50twd one way. you can pay with cash or ipass (their form of ez link card) if you are getting it, or if you have one already. if not, don't bother, just use cash.

Ok a tip for you, you should try to rent bicycles from the mainland, either from yanchengpu/sizihwan and cycle to the port. The ferry allows bicycles on and there is no/not much additional fee (it is within the price range i stated above). the bicycle rental on cijin can be more "expensive". it is cheap for singaporeans la (200twd per day) but if u can get it for about 50twd from the mainland, why not save the money?:s13:

Per trip on the ferry cost by cash: 25NTD
Per trip on the ferry cost by cashless card: 20 NTD
