Some couples put themselves under undue financial stress because they set the unfeasibly high target of providing $2,000 or so a month in outlays for each of their children.

They believe that over $500,000 is needed to raise each child from birth to age 21, or $1 million for two children, a sum that is surely out of reach for the average household.

$500K per child sounds about right if taking into account uni course fees and that's without a full suite of enrichment programs.
Also better to plan and consider this amount before having kids and not actually have to fork out so much, than to think it's possible to raise one on $500/mth then get a rude shock when realities hit.

Lai liao, gaslighting starts.

Tells u the obvious - that all u need is food and shelter for your kids.

No need tuition, no need spend on CCS and enrichment. No need to spend more trying to get into good schools because "all schools are good schools".

Then today this article came out:
https://www.straitstimes.com/busine...le-think-having-over-600k-is-enough-to-retire

All part of a strategic narrative telling us cost of living high is thanks to us having our own ambition.

3) expensive childcare rather than going to My first skool
4) attend tution, enrichments , left brain right brain classes....
5) must wear branded like crocs footwear
