gotten a NAS donkey years back and sold it off after 1 week.

main reason: thinking NAS is network sharing of file, i took 2 existing hdd (full of mp3 and jpgs) and plus into the NAS. everything was gone in a min. i put the hdd back into my desktop and everything was still gone. cant even recover using those recovery softwares.

revisiting NAS options due to needs and wonder if i can move the hdd between a NAS & windows desktop and still able to read the files.

I plan on building my own NAS using some old parts and FreeNAS OS i come across while googling. any other suggestions on the OS portion?

You should back up all data before you insert HDD into NAS.
Once boot up, NAS will initialize and install the NAS OS if un-recognized disk format. Proceed with this step means clean wipe of all data on disks.

However, Synology NAS do allow migration from one NAS to another without losing data. Always back up if you cannot afford to lose the data.

so i assume the answer is still a "No"?

could anyone propose other options if i wish to achieve this?

currently i plug 1 USB HDD to my Asus RT66U.
there is some inbuild function which allows me to access the file on the USB HDD. anyway to replicate onto a desktop?
