Will be going to kyushu area next week and am driving from fukuoka to Aso to Kagoshima

Any things to take note when driving or any places that would be recommended to stop over along the way while driving?

Would sakurajima in kagoshima take 1 whole day as well? Or will we have time to spend at another location?

If anyone could recommend nice and affordable places to have lunch and dinner in kagoshima / aso / ibusuki would be great! Have in mind their Kurobuta, Keihan Rice and somen. Any other must try dishes beside those three?

many thanks in advance :D

With a car, you can easily cover sakurajima in half a day. Just visit the 3 observation points.

For Fukuoka to Aso, you should take the route from Beppu, Oita instead of going from Kumamoto. A lunch at Yufuin or Beppu would be a most excellent suggestion I would think.

I had keihan rice at a nice Amami ryori restaurant at the pier area in Kagoshima. I find the chicken rice so so. (and really nothing compared to our Hainanese Chicken rice, which is way more interesting and tastier!) But the restaurant is pretty interesting as it has live music which makes it really worthwhile.

Anyway the area around the Izurodori is full of shops and restaurants. You will find lots of interesting restaurants around there.

Are you going to drop by Takachiho on your way south of Aso? It is really nice place to spend a day.

Haven't been to Ibusuki so I can't recommend anything there.

Are you just renting it for one day to drive all along the expressway from Fukuoka to Kagoshima? With a diversion to Aso?

If you are doing this, why? Unless you find driving on expressway fun, it is not very interesting you know? It may be cheaper to take the train to Kumamoto, rent a car from the station and visit Aso, return the car back to Kumamoto and then continue on train to Kagoshima... and it will be more interesting and less stressful.

I recommend you stay in Kurokawa for the night. It is just 1 hr drive from Aso and the accommodation there is way better than any on Aso.

Thanks Kifo, for the link.

I think the restriction won't be lifted anytime soon tho, but Kyushu has plenty of nice places to go to, especially in a car
