Hi guys

Just collected my SSD today and have a couple of questions

Which sata port is it recommended to connect my SSD to?
Using the Z68XP-UD3.

Am planning to do a fresh install of Windows 7, do i just detach the current HDD, attach SSD, insert CD and select boot from the CD and proceed to install?

Also is there anything i have to do in the BIOS? Went online to read and i see them posting about having to change somethings in BIOS.

Lastly, is there anything I have to do/set once i connect back the HDD? I intend to wipe it.

Thanks in advance!

1) Connect to SATA 6GB/s port. (the white one)

2) Might want to disconnect HDD first.

3) May need to go to BIOS and set SATA controller to AHCI mode.

4) Remember to set boot priority to the SSD first or else the rig will boot from the HDD instead.

Thanks for the reply! Regarding point 3, do I have to update my bios before doing that? And what happens if I did not set it to ahci before booting?

Sorry first time with ssd haha

No need to update bios for that. As long as you set the SATA controller to ACHI before installing Windows, you should be fine. Otherwise, you will need to fiddle with the Windows Registry to set the SATA controller to ACHI mode. (Liddat might as well reinstall Windows.)

Ahh I see, will give it a try in awhile hehe.

Another question, are there any programs i should avoid installing on the SSD?
Like programs that write too much, I remember reading SSDs have limited writes so it is better to install programs that write alot to the HDD?
So SSD is just for OS and frequently access programs E.g Steam and games?

Thanks and sorry!

Actually, SSDs are designed to withstand being written on for about a decade's worth of use and thus it is fine to just install anything you like on the SSD and not be kiasi and just install the OS and forget about it. (What would be the point of SSDs of 128GB sizes and above if it was only used as a container for the OS? Liddat might as well just buy a 32GB SSD.) The only things that are not recommended on a SSD are VM ware and to do constant benchmark tests on the SSD.

Go read up on SSD endurance tests to find out more.
