From ‘Khaw:Something not right with EC scheme’, 27 April 2013, article by Woo Sian Boon, Today

A few months after some super-sized Executive Condominium (EC) units were sold at eye-catching prices, sparking a public debate on whether the EC scheme was being abused, National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan has signalled that the scheme will be tweaked.

Speaking on Thursday evening to participants at an Our Singapore Conversation (OSC) session focused on housing, he said that “something is wrong somewhere” with the scheme. “We cannot carry on the ECs with these current rules,” he said.

…Referring to the qualifying income ceiling for ECs, Mr Khaw said: “Hence, there is a sense of inequity here. The lower-income groups are getting less subsidies than somebody who is earning S$12,000. So, something is wrong somewhere. Therefore, we cannot carry on the ECs with these current rules.”

Views on the relevance of the different types of public housing units in Singapore?

Should there be executive condominiums? What about DBSS flats?

Should the $10,000 income ceiling for HDB flats be raised?

you want the all or nothing version?

scrape HDB

why the heck government is responsible for more than 80% of the populations' housing issues?

Hong Kong has barely 50% living in so called public built housing and they have a bigger land mass than us.

make it a free for all... no subsidies, no MOPs, no regulations except for land lease...

Scrap executive condos and focus on BTO flats

INTEREST in executive condominiums (EC) surged last year, with many buyers drawn by the potential price gains ("Potential for profit drawing buyers to EC market"; Sunday).

While there is nothing wrong with gaining from property investments, the Housing Board (HDB), as the nation's public housing authority, should not perpetuate this unhealthy trend when it comes to public housing.

The HDB should leave this to the private property sector.

It should go back to its original mission of providing affordable public housing for citizens.

There are many newlyweds and singles in need of an affordable roof over their heads.

In land-scarce Singapore, it is not the optimum use of resources to allocate for more ECs.

Instead, the HDB should phase out ECs and build more Build-To-Order flats to satisfy the queue of newlyweds hoping to get their own place so that they can start a family, as well as the growing segment of single citizens.

Why the Government must stop Building Executive Condominiums

Those who unashamedly aspire to live in private housing with all the extra bells and whistles should not receive government grant simply because it is their life style choice, ie a want rather than need.

The government has rightly place income ceiling for purchaser of HDB flats so that deserving citizens will not be priced out.

Perhaps, these income ceilings should be reviewed and adjusted higher to reflect on the rising combined incomes of dual incomes couples with no children so more can be eligible to buy HDB flats.

In short, the Government has "created" this problem by its own policy which should had been looked into and set right long time ago. This so called "sandwiched" class is but a subjective comparison between those who had worked hard and moved up from public to private housing and those who aspire to this exclusiveness instantly but had no patient to work their way up.

Its unfair for all existing public and private property owners who pay large sum of property taxes annually and in-fact all tax payers to continue to subsidize this "sandwiched" class who want instant private housing. This "sandwich" class is virtually holding the general tax payers at ransom to keep up their aspiration to private housing.

Private housing is not an entitlement. The public should not be made to subsidize for those who want private housing but can ill-afford it.

The Government must scrap the EC scheme sooner and not later. Land meant for EC should be released for private housing since those who can afford to buy million dollars EC are those who least need government hand-out and will be able to afford mass market private condominium.

and mine is always that resale market should never been opened....

but we did them all already

EC does have a bit of a purpose. The thing is that HDB never put their foot down on private developers doing things in their name.

raise ceiling for wat ?
HDB is not developer thats catering for higher income bracket.

those will be managed by SC Global or Far East.

in the 1st place, they shld not be making EC or DBSS
or "premium" properties.

there's no need for a non-profit or govt service to move "upmarket"
