I owned an Asus rampage v extreme, I have been using it's onboard sound for awhile and is pretty satisfied with the quality (not an audiophile). Recently I managed to savage a old Creative X-Fi Titanium Gaming Sound Card. Is the sound card better or the onboard sound card better?

Hmm, you managed to salvage an creative sound card and you are asking us which sound better? Why not test it out yourself and find out? If you can't hear a difference then dont bother. Asking us to tell you which is "Better" so that you wouldn't miss a "wasted" opportunity to use it is silly. Try it on! turn if off! is it better?

You mentioned that you aren't an audiophile so it the answer isn't that important. But if you really must know, Technically the soundcard is supposed to give you better sound, but nowadays onboard audio is good enough that most cant really tell a difference. Especially with that high end motherboard that you are using.

Also, I noticed you are using a the razer leviathan. Perhaps thats why you cant tell any difference. Try using a earphones or headset. I think sound quality difference is more apparent in those mediums

less interferance with a sound card. like hissing, popping sounds when using a pc but if you do not encounter such problems then onboard is good enough

different sound card should produce different sound signature if i m not wrong.... base on the amplifying part of the sound card....

decent 200+ 2.1 speakers = of cus there is , but it doesnt need a good soundcard because u cant blow the juice out from it . The point is dun waste $$ on a soundcard if u dun have a very gd speaker , but for headphone maybe worth it

Hi, I just bought a Asus STX sound card and it does make a difference on my Razer Laviathan and great improvement on my Sennheiser headset.

Even tho my Mobo MSI H97 gaming 3 came with a audio which support up to 600 ohm but it don't really work well.

Yes it does help. But a sound card can only help so much. The main function of a sound card is to decode digital signals (binary bits of 1s and 0s) into analog signal (continuous signal). How good the sound is depends on how good the speakers can convert the analog electrical signal into audio output through reverbations of the speaker diaphragm. Hence speakers are more important than soundcards if u wan better quality audio.

I have a Razer Barracuda as well as Audigy Prelude but am currently using onboard sound. Not much difference.

btw, I'm using an amp paired with Monitor Audio Gold studio speakers.
