If you are using the speaker listed on your right and if you are looking for sound quality improvement then i shall say just keep the money.

But if you really really want then can get the Creative Xfi Xtreme Audio PCIe at $119.

Lol that xonar u7 is good too.

But for TS, even if he buy a $300 sound card also no use. His speaker can't produce quality sound. Just like what roy had mentioned.

Yup that why i didn't recommend EU higher end sound card. so Xonar U7 just nice for EU. easily control and can plug headset during night time watching some movie

Hi, thanks for the comments and recommendation.
I will be getting new speaker and headphone in future. Just changed my rig yesterday. So now planning to get a sound card as sound card should be able to last quite long(future use)

from my experience:

at least a 2.1 sound system can tell the difference between onboard sound and a dedicated soundcard.

creative Z series is not bad but I think out of ur budget ($140)

can adjust bass and tremble which compliments your high quality headphones or speakers(2.1, 5.1, 7.1...etc)

soundcard is a good investment as I had an creative Audigy platinum ex 1 and used it for about 10 years I think. No problems at all.

Get a pair of better speakers > sound card, your onboard good enough...
If you really want a good audio experience you must be prepared to fork out on a good headphones such as AT AD-700X/expensive speakers such as Klipsh Pro Media 2.1 and paired it with a soundcard.
Music -> Xonar Essence STX
Gaming -> usually 7.1 soundcards

but I would just recommend you getting a comfortable pair of headset/headphones or a pair of speakers with that $100.

I also not that hardcore into sound system. Because my friend say it's a good investment as a normal sound card can feel the difference from on board sound

there's a difference but your output(speakers/headphones) must also be at a certain quality.

like what RX-Turbo said and I second it; You can consider the Swans m10. Real value for money. Sounds as good as a speaker that cost 2x more than it.

get the speaker first then a sound card. but I recommend you save up and get a good decent quality sound card.

Why dont you buy 2nd hand Titanium X-FI (non HD)/xonar dx for $50 or even $40 and be done with it. Save you alot of money. You can use the spare money from your initial budget to buy 2nd hand speakers too.

Get a good set of speakers first then think and consider a soundcard.

A good set of speakers would then need a soundcard to drive it nicely.

Unless you have a home av receiver like mine then you probably wont need a sound card and probably just use coaxial cable to bypass it and let the amplifier do the job.

Which in turn im still waiting for asus to bring in the soundcard with hdmi for bluray movies!

So ya. Speakers first. Then soundcard 2nd.

Sorry for hijack. But i'm currently using a Sony MDR 7506 headphone for gaming and music and onboard audio. Would me getting a soundcard help in the getting better sounding music, cos some said get a better speaker first then soundcard.

Also which soundcard would you guys recommend for me (most bang for the buck)?
