Hey guys,

Have a still great and working Z5500 which I moved over to my new location. Only just noticed that the foams/cone area is 'rotting/spoilt'. Other than that, its still working great~

Wanna ask around if these can be fixed? Attached picture for reference of my speakers' status. Thanks!

DIY, Buy the rubber cone and a tube of cone glue, not difficult with some practices. Been doing that for years, seasoned speakers are way better than new speakers.

The solution depends on the cost/benefit which is case-by-case...

For the perfect restoration, tiagong Logitech uses Tang Band W3-593SF for the woofers. Which is probably the least economical solution but the most straightforward.

The next solution is the ghetto one that requires the least effort but lots of people use in ghetto scenarios and provides perhaps the most benefit-vs-cost as a result - Take your art & craft glue and just fill in the cracks. Silicone works too.

Third solution is to replace the surrounds surrounds. This has the benefit of being cheap, looking good, and potentially giving you the closest restoration for the money. Downside is it requires a lot of effort and potentially give you the worst results, ranking it lowest on the cost/benefit list if your time is worth money.

And this is something that you can get a shop's help to do. But check the price be it per-speaker or for everything, and see if it makes sense.

The fourth solution is to buy a different replacement driver. The downside is high risk of screwup resulting in loss of $$$. You also don't get the exact restoration. But this isn't the problem if the product itself has room for improvement and you want the improvement.

I myself am waiting for this to arrive to replace the original drivers of Audioengine A2.

And finally, IMHO the best solution cost/benefit wise, is to dump the satellites and replace them with better passive speakers. With 5 speakers it can get expensive however. This is where cheaper speakers sets for HT can come in handy.

It will be easy to replace than repair the spks. My 2 cents advise.

This is one topic that depends on people. Some people say it doesn't. (Especially second-hand sellers )

Some people / some speaker repair shops rebuild woofers - Replace or repair voice coil, cone, spider, and they also say won't affect the sound.

You change the surround also will affect the sound by right. But most people seem to have no issue with that.

Let me put it this way: Did you hear a change in sound as your speaker slowly degraded? Did you hear much difference between the woofer with old surround vs one with new surround? If no, then would you think you can hear a difference between a repaired surround vs a new one?

Lagi best is someone who just change one tweeter to a different one.

Anyway, update on the China woofer: It sucks. Waste of $30.

And I also got a chance to play with the satellites of z623 and they suck too.

So the best choice is to spend zero money on the satellites. Repair them in the cheapest way possible to tide over. Then buy better satellites.
