@bendi85, if the doc at KKH think your son is speech delay, do not adopt the thinking that he is slow and he should be alright when he is older.

My advice, find a speech therapist, and get him checked out by a qualified speech therapist. it is not going to be cheap, but at least you know for sure, what are his speech deficit.

At home when he is communicating with you, how does he do it? What is his communicating style?Does he point? Does he talk to you? Eg, when he wants a biscuit or a cake or something, how does he get his message across to you?

OK, that is already a sign of speech delay. You have to do something asap. Speech therapist will do a EIP. Early intervention program.

Pointing replaces speech. If he points and you pick for him, his form of communication is non verbal and incidentally, you encourages him to do that because he point and you perform the task. You did not encourage him to speak.

There are many things you should be doing to assist your son an to encourage him to speak. Start reading about PECS.

Oh my..tomorrow we going kkh for assessment.
Is it a form of autism? Shld we go for private speech therapist or wait for kkh referral? I heard the assessment by kkh will take a few months to know the result.

Do not bother about labelling. Autism is a spectrum. When you go to KKH for assessment, ask them about EIP and ask them how you can help your son at home to improve his communication.

one way of helping your son, is the ABA approach for assisting children with speech delay.

It is about positive reinforcement.

here is a simple url that you can read

https://www.autismspeaks.org/applied-behavior-analysis-aba-0

Do you own research so that if you ever goto see a specialist, you can ask the right questions. It is going an expensive journey and you might as well start early. I truly hope there is nothing wrong with your son.

Some other things you may check for is whether the kid has tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) or lip-tie. Most of the time it doesn't affect the speech, but sometimes tongue-tie can restrict the movement of the tongue. The kid will just give up after a while if the particular vocal movement of the tongue is too tiring.

It will also help if you talk to the child normally, as in don't baby talk.

I have went for the assessment today and doc initial diagnosis is my son has a few development milestone which are not met which are mainly the communication and speech area. We will be going for some therapy session and review will only be in end dec to determine if my son has make any improvement or requires further treatment.

I feel the wait is too long (from now till dec) to be able to get a diagnosis and am afraid that it might be too late then to only start to intervene. Should i go to a private pediatrian to expedite the process? I read that early intervention programme requires referral and they do accept private referral too.
