SPF to get new Commissioner of Police in January 2026

Mr How Kwang Hwee takes over from Mr Hoong Wee Teck, who is retiring after 10 years in the top post.

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Police Force (SPF) will get a new Commissioner of Police on Jan 6, 2026.

Mr How Kwang Hwee, 46, will take over from Mr Hoong Wee Teck, 62, who is retiring after 10 years in the post.

Mr How is currently the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Policy). He has held several key appointments, including director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and senior director of the policy development division at the headquarters of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
In his previous roles as Deputy Commissioner (Investigation and Intelligence) and director of the operations department, Mr How led the planning and execution of many operations, including the security operations of the Trump-Kim Summit in 2018 and the anti-money laundering case, which resulted in the arrest of 10 foreign nationals.
"As Deputy Commissioner (Policy), Mr How has been helping Mr Hoong drive technological transformation in the SPF, in particular the adoption of artificial intelligence to strengthen capabilities in investigation, and crime prevention and detection," MHA said in a media release on Monday (Oct 6).
“He also led the review of the SPF’s service delivery strategy and steered the transformation of its public-facing services, which has resulted in significant enhancements in the experience of members of the public when interacting with the SPF."

OUTGOING COMMISIONER OF POLICE

Mr Hoong has been with SPF for 38 years and was appointed the Commissioner of Police in January 2015.
He held many key appointments, including Deputy Commissioner (Investigations and Intelligence), director of CID and director of the police intelligence department.
MHA said that as the Commissioner of Police, Mr Hoong “significantly strengthened” the capabilities of the SPF.
“New technological capabilities have been built for crime fighting and prevention, including unmanned aerial vehicles for patrols and incident response, and a police camera network with video analytics in public places, which has significantly improved the success rate of, and speed with which the SPF has been able to solve crimes such as robberies,” said MHA.
Mr Hoong also established SPF’s Anti-Scam Command and Emergency Response Teams. In the first half of 2025, scam cases and scam losses decreased by 26 per cent and 12.6 per cent from the same period in the previous year.
“Under Mr Hoong’s leadership, Singapore has remained one of the safest cities in the world, with consistently low crime rates, and high public trust in the SPF,” said MHA.
"We thank Mr Hoong for his decades of loyal service and inspiring leadership of the SPF."
