Wishing all the Singaporeans in Canada a very Merry Christmas!
I was up in Edmonton last week. Went to WEM. Galaxyland. World Waterpark.
Stayed at Wingate by Wyndham Edmonton West.

Also drove around to look at Snow Valley and South Edmonton Common.

I'm sending the kid for classes the last few years, I think he might be ready, maybe this year will be a year where the family gets to go.

Classes at COP? Snowboarding?

Where you planning to go riding this winter?

I got the season passes for Lake Louise. They have a new chair this coming season and opening new terrain.

COP loh. Probably Nakiska for the family.. Lake Louise is a bit too far for me for a day trip.

Nakiska is a good first step up from COP. Smaller resort. Although it gets very icy due to the low elevation and milder temp. The snow is also more man made.

But distance wise it's actually not that much nearer than say Banff Sunshine.

Banff Sunshine has more terrain bigger area. But you have to sit the gondola into the ski area. Which takes about 15-20 min.

The drive from the exit to Banff Sunshine to the Lake Louise exit is about 30 min. And car park is right at the resort. My wife prefers Lake Louise. Prettiest of the resorts. Also the food is probably the best.

Oh I keep forgetting to mention....Norquay!!! Another smaller resort. Chair lifts are quite old though. Shorter season.

Hope you enjoy the slopes this winter!

Xmas period very very crowded on the ski slopes near Calgary. I usually avoid that period. But we would go to the BC ones and do ski in ski out. Short holiday.

Wah you ran quite a distance!

yeah, wanted to run to vermillion lake but I remembered wrongly, that road doesn't lead there. haha, end up thought I should run to 2 jack lake, I laughed at myself when I hit 12km and hadn't reach there yet.

I will take note of that, you have a point, prob won't be too close to Christmas Day itself. see how, still many months to go.

I started this thread back in 2013 before I got approved for Canada. I recently shared on another thread and thought I should post the same reply here and hopefully it helps whoever that is looking to move to Canada. When it comes to moving to another country for good, there will also be naysayers, so be prepared for that.

There is always going to be 3 camps of people

1. people that feels that Singapore is amazing(which it really is) and there's no other places like Singapore(#1airport, #1passport).

2. people thought of moving but procrastinated, they will always be wondering if their lives will be different, had they make the move. Well, they will never know if they don't take the first step.

3. people that thought of it and act on it, they may like it and continue to stay there or return to Singapore because Singapore is just better.

I think what @cyke69sg and me have mentioned is based on our narrow experience in Canada and specifically Calgary and may not be the rest of the country. It is by no means an experience that speaks for all migrants for the various countries. It is also based on our personality and risk appetite.

The idea of moving came to me sometime in late 2000s when there's an influx of foreigners in Singapore and I felt like a foreigner here in Singapore, why not venture out and be a foreigner myself. It also came at a time when I feel that life was getting a little boring and I wanted to have a personal growth. I don't see myself running on the hamster wheel to keep up with the cost of living. I don't want to work in a swanky office and come back to my sweltering flat or travel lavishly for 2 weeks in Europe and come back and slog like no day and night.
It is easier to have a higher income in Singapore to maintain the mortgage, car, maid, tuition, but if one part of the formula fails because of sickness or job loss, it is going to be an issue.

in terms of education, Singapore has world class education for kids, but the crack is so big, that it is easy for kids to get distracted, not do well and fall inside the crack. It will be pretty tough for kids to go through the system without lifelong weekly multiple tuition classes. Sometimes, it really takes the joy out of learning in this stressful environment because not everyone can get into universities. Down here where I am, you fall down, the crack is almost non existent.

Made the move, was it a pain? a little. but it is all worth it and no regrets. I enjoy the better quality of life that it provides. Given the choice if we turn back the clock and I had the choice again, I will certainly do it again.

So if you are thinking of moving, and you are young or a young couple (in your mid 20s to early 40s), you have nothing to lose. Just do it. What you lose in Singapore, you will gain back in other forms . Life will work out by itself.
