Situation - had enough miles last week to book award ticket in Business for my wife on SIN-CHC-SIN Dec 20/Jan 5 return.

After transferring points from DBS, now I have enough miles to book my own flight as well, but now now both legs are waitlisted.

Soo... considering the following situation, what are alternatives, except buying revenue ticket which is NOT considered as an option?

How much time will it take waitlist to clear, if any?

the waiting time could be as long as last few days before departure.

You can check flytalk, there is a thread there for the SQ award flight tickets.

Most of the ppl they will book two award tickets, one is higher tie, one is the one you want. But for the pros and cons, you need to research a bit.

No higher or lower tier is available - there is no F on those planes and seats in Y are not available is saver at all. There are no flights available to AKL either for redemption.

I have UA miles but there are no award flights either on those days.

Try air newzland? but you will lose the 15% online discount.

What I do is book the flexi or standard one as back up

If waitlist on saver is successful, I cancel the flexi/std and pay usd15 to get the points credited back.

That requires to have enough miles to cover both bookings. I don't have this amount - miles I have are enough to book saver award only, nothing else in addition or ever in replacement.

Perhaps U can try purchase miles from others

No other options really, if PPS maybe u can call hotline and ask to help push.

1. Call in to check what is the probability of wait list clearing. They have the probability percentage in their system. At the same time, they can put a note that you had called and try to nudge you up the wait list.
2. Try booking individual tickets. Instead of booking by the pair, try separating them. You have a higher chance of securing singular tickets rather than paired tickets. But you run the risk of one party getting the ticket while the other party have to pay full fair if the wait list doesn't clear (lower probability, but not null).
3. Try for Premier Economy? 45k compared to Business at 55k, not the most "worthwhile" option, but it's something.

Anyway. Booked Flexi Economy round trip ticket today. It was $2200 (the most expensive ticket I paid in Y ever).

If waitlist clears, I will cancel the ticket for US $150 fee and will fly in C. If it won't - well, sometimes there are no good options.

Btw since your departure is Dec, I think you can afford to wait a few weeks to try securing the waitlist.

Getting regular tickets shouldn't be any problem even after a month or two, in case waitlist is unsuccessful

When I booked my revenue ticket, there was 3 (three) seats left in Economy on outbound flight and 6 - on return.

Sometime tour agencies reserve the seats by the block. Once it past a certain date, the remaining balance will be returned to the airline. Depending on the number of seats returned and how close it is to the departure date, it might cause an occasional fire sale. Better to sell those seats cheap than to fly with empty seats.

Of course, they can't sell it too cheap as not to cover the necessary cost (gas, misc charges etc). But technical info like these are for another thread :)

Always come across people using miles for tickets but somehow imo it creates more uncertainty. The only times I find miles (including other airlines) useful is for intra Asia where there are multiple flights per day...

Just my 2 cents as I would never plan/book my family holidays using miles...

Apparently you do not have much experience in this field.

I've booked SIN-NRT-SIN (three times), SFO-NRT-SIN-TPE-SFO, SIN-NRT-SFO-LAX-ICN-SIN, SIN-CPT-JNB-SIN, SFO-SYD-SFO, SFO-MUC-TBS-FRA-SFO, TBS-IST-BKK-SIN-PEK-IST-TBS on UA and SQ miles last 10 years. 80% of the flights were in Business. If I would want to pay them in cash it would be close to $120k instead.

Agree
For business class it's worthwhile using miles cos it's only slightly over 1x more miles than economy. But the actual business class tickets may cost 2-3 times more than economy, especially long haul sectors like to US (~4-5 times)

I don't travel biz class so perhaps that's the reason. My experience is mainly for flying with family (including kid) so won't have that much miles to spend anyway.

On the two occasions which I tried to claim my miles I end up being still on wait list 2 weeks before flight departs. Doesn't make sense cos my accommodation is already all booked and I don't want to end up on separate flights.

I end up claiming all my miles for intra Asia routes which I thought wasn't worth the miles.
