Guys, currently my HDD having some bad sector and thinking to upgrade to SSD if problems persist.

My budget is about $150 total.

I mostly game, so thinking of getting SSD for faster loading time.
Should i get SSD + HDD or just a bigger SSD? Im using about 250gb currently and it seems not here or there to just get a 250gb SSD.

Thanks

well its up to u really, if u required some storage space definitely go for SSD + HDD, but if u dun have that many files and mainly for gaming, can consider Transcend 512GB/ Zotac 480GB (not sure if they falls into your budget or not =:p)

Calculate the size of your OS + games.
If it's close to 250gb, you might want to get a larger SSD so you have space for future games.

It's usually advisable to get an SSD + HDD, ssd for games + OS and HDD for everything else.
But if you are currently only using 250GB and don't have much personal files, then you don't really need HDD I guess.

Btw Zotac 480GB (popular choice) fits your budget perfectly after factoring in discounts, just that it's oos currently - http://www.lazada.sg/zotac-480gb-25-premium-ssd-phison-s10-toshiba-mlc-2420939.html?boost=2
Use friyays code on app on fridays with dbs card for 12% off - 163.9-12%=$144.23

Don't buy cheap TLC although it is very tempting.

SSD lifespan is tied to its capacity... so if u want it to last longer, get a bigger drive

is there really a difference reliability wise for TLC/MLC ssd?

Reliability = MTBF (depends on manufacturer)

Endurance = drive write per day (How many times it can be written over per day)

Most enterprise SSD uses MLC but they have different endurance. It depends on which model you are looking at.

TLC is a cheaper alternative because it has lesser endurance, it is targeted at consumer because of the lower endurance. (DWPD)

Below is an example

Zotac 480GB SSD, up to 480 TBW. 3 Years local warranty

To calculate the endurance. 480*0.48 = 230.4
This means you can write over 230.4 times of this zotac SSD.
If you are using for 3 years.
230.4/3/365 = write over 0.21 TB Per Day for 3 years (DWPD)
If you are using for 5 years
230.4/5/365 = 0.126TB Per Day for 5 years. (DWPD)

An SSD can be used for very long if you dont write over it repeatedly.

Remember that it is advertised (UP TO), so it depends on your luck and other components of the SSD.

I am thinking of buying a SSD but Comex is coming in Sept, do they usually have a wide choice of SSDs and good deals / promotions?

Worth to wait or not?

On the subject of SSD, what's everyone's thoughts on the Samsung Evo? They are pretty much on the recommended list of most reviewers I've came across.

Anyway Sammy is free gift so u can buy that ssd with a free gift and u see u want to sell/own use/or give away yo other people. But the price is original or slightly cheaper. As for SLS shop booth, I think will be priced similar to their shop.

830, 840 evo and 850 evo user. No problems so far, all drives are still working. 840 EVO has a performance degradation issud that requires routine "defrag" on the SSD.

No perceptible performance degradation on the 830/850 evo though. But for eDrive hardware encryption users you'll probably be quite disappointed with how wonky it is.

But that's an outstanding Intel SATA controller issue that's left without a fix. No reliability issues otherwise.
