Hi I have a HP Pavilion laptop with intel Core i7 that i find slow due to the HDD

My Macbook Pro from 2012 has SSD that's much faster!

Is it easy to upgrade to SSD? Any recommended brand of SSD and do I need to buy all my Microsoft Office and Windows again?

Thx

What pav model isit? :zotto: :look:

You will have to reinstall office (with the cd key) and also Windows. Alternatively you cab opt to clone your hdd to your ssd

What os are you on?

Use a software eg Acronis, clone your current harddisk to a external USB drive. Replace harddisk to SSD then restore from external USB drive.

Few pre requisites:
Check your Windows 10 version (Home / Pro) & if it's 32 or 64 bit.
Prepare a thumb drive - 4gb at least.

No issues with reinstalling.
Just download the media creation tool from Microsoft here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10

Then install it.
When install asks for CD key - click skip.

Once installed,
do the following
Start --> Active Windows

Add SSD or change HDD to SSD for Laptop

Hi.

Sorry to dig out this thread. As i had a HP Pavilion Laptop model no. is 15-au103tx i5-7200 facing same problem, very slow startup. As i not sure which optional is more better?

1) Upgrade the 1T HDD to Ssd 240GB $65
2) Remove the CD rom drive to add a SSD Tray $25. Add SSD 120GB $45 as a secondary HDD and remain my 1T hdd.

Optional 1 or 2?

Is up to you, how much space you need and if you want faster but less storage or slower but more storage.

Option 2 gets the best of both worlds - you have storage, and you speed.

In order for that to occur, you will have to install windows on the ssd. Else it will still result in the problems mentioned.

Another thing to note would be the os installation / cloning process.

You can either clone it from your hdd to your ssd
- which has the following prerequisites:
Hdd used space to be <= ssd space.

This means you would have to xfer files else where until you meet the required conditions started.

alternatively, you can do a clean os installation which requires a license.

Do note that on option 2 you cannot use the CD Tray for SSD to run the OS as not all laptops are able to boot from CD ROM drive.

Also CD ROM drive slot may not be SATA-3 which also may not be SATA-2 but SATA-1 connector.

I have 2 laptops on CD-ROM drive converted to Tray type for HDD instead and found out unable to boot for no BIOS option.
And all my laptops have upgraded to SSD for booting which is fast.

So you may have to clone or fresh install OS to the SSD instead.

As for HDD in CD-ROM drive slot is a good option to have more storage, depend on your usage.

Combination of option 1 and 2. Exiting slot upgrade to sad 120G and move your 1T HDD to CD ROM bay. Reason is simple, drive on CD ROM bay remain as removeable disk type in Windows. There is some different in term of speed and characteristics.

Want to borrow this thread to ask a question on cloning (hdd migration to ssd). Does the cloning bring the windows 10 recovery partition over to the new ssd too?

Yes.. it would also depend on the cloning software &or method use and should not be an issue.

Yes, it does. You can search for any cloning software. I was also searching for one in late November, since I bought an ssd during 11.11. I ended up using EaseUS since that was that popped up first on Google. Haha. There's a free version. Cloning took quite fast too; under an hour to clone around 300+ gb of data from old hdd to new ssd.

I've since used it 3 times on separate pcs, all no issue. Very straightforward.

is it possible to just move the Win OS to the SSD and leave the rest on the HDD?
Many reasons for slowness.
Slowness can be because of virus infection or the OS is too old or not updated.
You also must do disk clean up.
Yes I was told by Aftershock that it is possible to move the OS to the SSD. Most importantly your computer must be able to support 2 storage disk. My notebook do not have CD player so can use that slot to connnect to a second storage. You must know how to do it or else you must pay to get it done. PC dreams do have such service.

I am using a Samsung 900 series laptop which is running out of space (128gb SSD)

I intend to upgrade it to 500gb SSD and was quoted $100 for the service of purchase, installation & cloning, is the price reasonable ?

Btw, I was told that mine is a Msata SSD, does it have any compatibility issue with now newer type of SSD ?

Any shop or person to recommend for such upgrades ?

Thanks for advise

The price quoted $100 would be only for cloning & replacement which will not include the 500GB SSD msata as cost itself is $100+.

You can save this $100 by doing yourself or half this cost by others.

There are plenty of useful guides in youtube & website on replacement of the msata SSD for your laptop model.

And cloning software are free and easy to do it as i have done numerous times on cloning system & partitions.

You can DIY using a utility call Acronis.

Thank you all for your comments and feedbacks. Just done the upgrade. Shifted the Hdd to the cd rom drive and added a 120gb Sata harddisk for the OS. The shop helped me to re-installed the OS and setup the new hardisk and format my old hardisk for storage use. Indeed the startup of the system is much more faster than the previous.

Damage
120gb sata hardisk $45
Second HDD Caddy $25
Installation and Service Charge $40
Total: $110
