SSD upgrade for MBP

I have a 500gb mbp from 2012 that has served me well but i find a bit slow. Understand that upgrading to SSD will make a huge difference to speed and i saw a video that makes me want to DIY upgrade

Where can i buy the a drive and how much will it be for 500gb?

i just bought a ssd online last week from amazon. i will be purchasing the optical drive replacement too so that i can have 2 hdds running concurrently.

For general use you can consider getting Crucial MX200 500GB it currently cost US$200 on Amazon. If you prefer performance SSD consider Samsung 850Pro or Intel 730 Series.

After you have installed the SSD please install TRIM enabler and enable TRIM. TRIM lengthens the lifespan of the SSD.

How much ram are you using now? if 4GB, recommended to upgrade to 8 or 16GB too.

If you are not using the optical drive, you can buy a optical to sata bay and use a storage hdd on your mbp2012. That way you can buy a smaller SSD just for OS only and use a normal HDD for storage.

IF i may add, any real signifiacant difference experience using the pro and the evo of the same Size. i know benchmark shows different but what about real life experience?

I just recently successfuly did it for my mbp early 2011. got a 128 crucial m4 ssd in the main bay and the original 500gb in the optical bay.

actually, what i did was to have a ssd in the main 2.5" bay area, and use a 1tb 5400rpm 7mm hdd for storage. Im not sure if the SSD can boot off the optical bay, if can, i would move my ssd over there and use a 9mm 2tb for storage.

if OSX and programs files are on the SSD, the speed boost is significant. a 250gb to 500gb ssd should be enough for everyday programs. I use the storage drive to store music, video, and photos.

Pro has longer longevity hence the 10 years warranty. But the price of a 250gb pro is about USD$50 more and 500gb pro about USD$100 more. Therefore I had chosen the 500gb EVO at USD$199.

real world performance difference, i read (i think storagereview.com) mentioned that evo exceed pro in some areas, cos of the SLC used in a small part of each chip.

That answers! Thanks ! yes, my question is similar to yours, can the SSD be place anywhere? optical bay or the main HDD bay, will there be any form of limitation? i guess it won't since it is limited by the motherboard and both are using the same ribbons right?

To be honest it looked quite OK in the you tube video but things can always look easier than they actually are!

Next thing is how do I get the software I need to make this run like a new Mac with nothing but the operating system?

I dont really want to copy everything as there is so too much stuff on the HD that I dont need.
I'll be doing a full backup onto a external HD but I do not want t restore everything onto the SSD (and I cant because it wont be big enough!)

If there is already a thread with all of this info, happy if you just point me in the right direction and I will read it

BTW is ordering from Amazon much cheaper than going to buy in Funan? I dont have time to wander around Funan anyway so Amazon prob easier, even if I have to wait for it

not sure what you mean by get the software to run it like a new mac.
since you're doing a clean install, you already start from ground zero. from there just install what you need.

Yes thats y the 2012 non retina macbook can still b upgraded unlike the retina macbooks now,all soldered on and parts r expensive... im gonna get one for myself for my nxt laptop...

Yep yep, running Yosemite on 2gb ram and ssd (mid 2009 mbp), so much smoother than snow leopard.. dont know why... haha

YESH! my mbp is finally upgraded to 250GB Samsung EVO SSD. takes around 15 secs to start up and reach login screen for fresh installation of yosemite.
