i'm looking to get a 256GB SSD to go with my mid-2010 MBP
suspect the existing hdd is going to die soon.

several questions :
1. read somewhere in here that SSDs need to upgrade firmware one? If yes, how often is that and whats the impact if I dont update?
2. any good 256GB SSD recommendation for budget about $300?
3. I've got the installation DVDs for Snow Leopard but my existing OS is Lion. If i were to reinstall from scratch, takes a long time to install SL followed by Lion. Is there any way to clone the disk from existing to new one and how?

TIA.

Personally, i've been using a Sandisk extreme 240gb which i got for under 300 about a year now, haven't had to update any firmwares, and honestly firmware updates are very uncommon for a matured product. It's usually the new products that needs firmwares to iron out issues. Performance wise, i cant give any professional input but its working well for me and minute differences can hardly be felt by the typical consumer

Go search for carbon copy cloner, probably the best disk cloning software out there

+1 on Carbon Copier Cloner.

btw, a tip

before you clone, do yourself a great favor by installing ALL UPDATES and software upgrades....

once done, get Onxy for mac moutain lion, and clear EVERYTHING

Finally get the maintenance scripts running.

only after the above have been done, then ccc the old hdd into the ssd

[ rationale : since ccc = defragmenting the stuff, might as well do it in one shot ]:s12:
